Actually she was pretty solid in Girlfight. I didnt have a problem with here in the F&F movies either. Ive seen worse believe me. Also she is a well known Latin Actress so the invite is worthy just on that note as well. Got Em!!

IDK who that 24 year-old artist is, but there's Xavier Dolan who in addition of having performed as Ron Weasley in the Quebec dubs of the Harry Potter films has directed 6 films, the first one at the age of 19, and has won major prizes at the Cannes film festival. Young age doesn't mean they don't have the experience.

Taste is another matter, though, and you can't even judge that from the work they do (i.e. Terrence Malick loving Zoolander). For all we know Michelle Rodriguez is a high-brow cinephile.

I knew right away it was John Boyega. He has two notable credits to his name so I thought that was a little soon.

Emma Watson got in and she is 26, but she has done numerous films already.

Well, those films are Attack the Block and Star Wars, and he's signed up to do a film with Kathryn Bigelow and Pacific Rim 2, so I'd say he's qualified enough.

Possible I suppose. I'll concede she is fine as a choice. It's just I saw her name and thought dear lord this women can't act out of a paper bag how the hell does she know good acting. Maybe she can judge that well and she just sucks at it herself I guess it is possible.

Is there a list of all actors and actresses in the Academy? I wonder if someone like Adam Sandler is.

I definetly think Moonlight is going to be a heavy contender moving forward. But early buzz is indicating La La Land to be the early favourite.

I am wondering if Arrival will have to stopping power to actually get nominated. Villeneuve hadn't had much luck with his more straigh forward thrillers and Sci-Fi has always been a tough sell to the academy despite last year's more accessible line up.

I don't think Silence is going to see a release by the end of the year honestly. And I think Affleck with get an apology director nod for Live by Night.

The rest are far too hard to even call.

I was close to putting Live By Night in there, but I figured the movie looks a lot like The Town, which didn't get major nominations. It's really only in Best Picture as a filler. Scorsese says he plans to release Silence this year, but I am skeptical. If it doesn't get released this year, I'll replace its major nominations with Live By Night.

I feel like Denis Villeneuve has finally got his chance, considering this is his most acclaimed film yet and it seems to be the sci-fi film of the year. Amy Adams is being praised for this film, and also Nocturnal Animals. I see Arrival being the more accessible film for the Academy, and getting her the nomination. However, Passengers could easily replace it if it turns out to be good, and Jennifer Lawrence could take her place.

Moonlight I belive will perform like "Room". It may not do well box office wise, but it'll be a sleeper hit. I see it getting love from the directors branch, just like some small indie hits like Room and Beasts of Southern Wild have.

Jackie has been getting insanely good reviews, and it seems like Natalie Portman is a sure-fire best actress winner. Apparently she's topped her performance in Black Swan. However, the film has buzz for more than just her performance. Apparently the film is also being praised for its direction and writing. I think it's a definite contender for Best Picture.

Has Café Society been getting good enough buzz to really contend or are we throwing it in there due to the players involved being Academy favorites?

I ask because I thought buzz was generally lukewarm and, having seen it, I wasn't all that impressed so I'm just kind of surprised.

I haven't seen it yet but based on reviews/buzz, I don't see it factoring into the race. Maybe if the Original Screenplay field is weak but that's about it, if that.

EDIT: just looked at Jabbercash's predictions, lots of love for La La Land. Is that based on actual buzz or just personal preference? I'm sure it'll factor into the race but I can't imagine it winning anything huge, let alone the top prizes.

I know nothing about writing a screenplay, but that was actually my biggest issue with the movie. That or the editing.

Anyway I'm grateful this thread exists because it's reminding me of a lot of the movies I had heard talk of but have since completely forgotten about (somehow Silence was completely off my radar).

Its only shots at the Oscars are for cinematography, costumes, and production design. But given its early release, it's unlikely any will happen

^ ah yeah, good point, it could factor into costume and production design. But only Midnight in Paris got a Production Design nod of his recent movies set in the early 20th century, and that's because it was so universally loved. Magic in the Moonlight didn't get any nominations, and I'd consider the buzz/reception with Cafe Society to be more in line with that movie.

Damien Chazelle directing Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling in a musical about - in part - an aspiring actress in LA. Seems right up the Academy's alley. Looking at some of the other hopeful contenders who knows if it'll pull through for the major wins. It doesn't have the diversity angle going for it (that might hurt it this year), but I at least see it favored for direction and cinematography just judging by the trailers and Chazelle's work on Whiplash.

That's exactly what I was thinking, but seeing the list jabber put together I don't see it even contending for those categories.

I dunno, I just don't see the Academy going for a musical, or anything with subject matter that could be deemed even remotely lighthearted. But we'll see. I'm definitely rooting for it, we could use a good modern musical and I'm a big fan of Gosling and Chazelle (Stone less so).

Don't forget Chicago. Things have changed since it won big in 2002, but the Academy isn't averse to a musical.

Edit: Not sure why I considered The Artist as a musical. I still have never seen it but was picturing dancing scenes from the trailers. Brainfart.

I could see Moana being nominated over Secret Life Of Pets.

Chicago was an anomaly, IIRC that was the first year the Oscars were in Feb instead of March and there are still people who say that if the Oscars HAD happened in March then The Pianist would've walked away with Best Picture (haven't seen Pianist but I've seen Chicago and while it's good, it's hard to believe it was really the Best Picture of 2002, which was a relatively strong year).

Still, a musical is somewhat overdue for some Academy love. And I don't blame you for thinking The Artist was a musical, there's definitely a lot of music some dancing in there. (You should see it btw, it's a nice little movie, even though I wouldn't have given it Best Picture I do enjoy it quite a bit.)
