Caught a matinee this afternoon and thoroughly enjoyed it. Great performances and writing, and fantastically well directed and edited. The movie jumps right into things with no downtime, and we get to know the characters along the way. It does wallow in cliches a bit, but it also does some new and interesting things within a familiar sandbox. Any comparisons to The Town or NCFOM (like I made earlier) are superficial; if anything, this movie is like a darker version of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (there's a sequence in here that reminded me of that movie, only with pickup trucks). Also an incredible tense shootout
[Show spoiler]with a death that happens so unexpectedly and brutally
it hits like a sucker punch. Just a really well done modern Western, undoubtedly better than the overrated Sicario (same writer). Solid 3.5/4, close to a 4/4.

I'll still go see it but Sicario is an awesome film.

Definitely want to check this out due to the outstanding reviews, it's cool to see Foster and especially Pine in something this lauded (besides Star Trek '09). I was also surprised at jacob's comments earlier in the thread but the reviews are too rapturous to ignore. It's playing at a theater around 18 miles away but if it's expanding nationwide this weekend I can wait.

I actually agree with him. This is a better film than Sicario.

It was good but a bit overrated. It was lacking narratively to me. But Denis v is a helluva director. He could make a toilet paper commercial tense.

This was overall more entertaining of a film and the dialogue was much better and wittier.

First day blu-ray pre-order

Hoping one day, some day the word overrated can disappear because people like you misuse the word. That's fine you thought it was good but when the majority say something is more than just good then it is properly rated.

I see your point. Whenever I dislike something as much as the majority, I chalk it up to having to see it again later down the road, or accept that it just isn't for me.

That's the point of the word though. I don't see how else you can use it. If one thinks the majority have rated it wrong, that's why the word is used.

Now here goes another five pages on this topic...lol

I thought Sicario was very good, but I can totally see someone saying that about it.

Don't want to spend a lot more time with this but this is what I'll say. Using the weird just comes off lazy to me. You can attach that word to anything without any substance behind it. It's a way of discrediting something without having to give a proper explanation as to why they think they are not worthy of praise.

I don't want to claim this is the reason, or that anyone's feelings on the film aren't valid...but just something to note.

When I saw this film, there weren't any reviews out for it. I had no idea what I was going into. I saw the film and formed my opinion completely around what I saw.

Everyone in this thread is seeing the film after reading positive reviews, and checking RT to see it at 99%. Now, I'm not saying that is swaying anyone's opinions...but it's definitely an interesting little piece of information. If you read reviews and pay attention to critics and RT, and see the film is well received, you're more likely to go into the film thinking and assuming you will also like it. I didn't have that pleasure.

The opposite also happens in many cases -- a movie gets huge critical raves, people go see it, and don't know what all the fuss is about so they say it's bad. Happens all the time.

This is a good movie. You didn't like it, which is fine, it happens. But the people who liked it aren't automatically sheep.

I wasn't trying to imply that at all. I just took the data, and interpreted it.

I'm perfectly fine with having a minority opinion. I hated Sicario and Fury Road also. I have no qualms liking films that are mostly hated, or hating films that are mostly loved.

I think that goes for anything, not just using the word "overrated." I've seen detailed critic reviews use it, and flyry even gave a reason why he thought it was overrated. He even liked the movie. Overrated too often is mistaken for "didn't like it" or "hated it." Not the case, I think some movies are good or great, even really liked them, but still think they are overrated. I think The Dark Knight is a fantastic movie but it's not one of the 20 best films ever made, as its accolades amongst audiences would seem to signify. There are some movies that I don't think are particularly good but get trashed way too harshly, and thus would be underrated in my opinion.

Thumbs up The movie's out - Where's the POLL ??

Anyway, saw this today and really enjoyed it. It's a nice "slow burn" type of film, with some Very funny moments or lines, and excellent performances by the leads (Chris Pine, Ben Foster, Jeff "mumble-mouth" Bridges -- lol, I mean, seriously, why does he talk like this in almost every recent movie?? ).

Pretty crowded theater too for a 1:45pm showing during the week (mostly Older folks, but I digress...)

Easily a 4/5-Star movie, maybe more.

I normally keep up with movies pretty well, but this came out of nowhere. I didn't know a thing about it and just saw the trailer for the first time an hour ago. Once I watched the trailer it sold me and I'm seeing it tonight at 8. I should've known about this too because Ben Foster is amazing.

I haven't seen this film yet, so can't comment on it compared to Sicario.

But saying that the dialogue here was "wittier" than in Sicario seems ... odd. I'm not entirely sure there was much dialogue there that was supposed to be witty in the first place. It's pretty freakin' dark.

Damn what a pleasant out of left field surprise. I seriously knew nothing about this or its reception before going in. I watched the trailer for the first time just an hour before seeing it. Walked out really really liking it. The cast was fantastic and the dialogue was great. Just a well rounded great movie. Yet again Ben Foster steals the show imo. This guy is great in every movie.

[Show spoiler] Also damn my jaw dropped when Alberto was shot...wow
