Great news about the longer cut. I'm a HUGE advocate for the presentation of the longest version possible of ALL films on home video. I want to see everything the director shot, not what a distributor dictated we should see.

So you prefer the Exorcist re-cut with added scenes over the original? Sometimes deleted scenes add nothing new or slow down pacing. Although they are fascinating to see. Maybe both cuts of this movie should be included?

I loved the Exorcist re-cut but I'm not saying ALL we should get are the Extended versions. Whenever possible the studios/labels should offer both versions. I don't know what Scorpion's plans are for this title but having this longer cut is a big deal.

Bad move to only have this 91 min version, someone took those 9 minutes out for a reason.

Just as many people are going to say the opposite here, he can't really win unless he wants to recut the shortened version from this new scan, or pay to use the same master from the German blu-ray, and then include BOTH. With only 1500 copies of it which are only allowed to be sold before December, I don't know if he has the time or will to do all that work. If he pushes the release back for extra work, it just runs much more risk of not selling out before December.

The German blu-ray is region free. If you want the 82 minute version, feel free stick with that.

I'm going with Scorpion's extended version.

I have the German blu, but I'll double dip for the longer cut plus the new extras.

The distributor took out the nine minutes to have a shorter movie -- the 91-minute version is how the director wanted it.

I'm pretty sure those 9 mins are gonna feel like an extra 49 mins. I'd rather have the 82 min cut we all know, and the extra scenes added as a separate bonus feature.

I saw the film at the drive ins, then on cable, then vhs, and dvd, and these scenes I almost didnt know were new until I played it back to back with the old DVD. They are important scenes that explains alot of his background and catholic guilt, and integrates flawlessly with the film and pacing isnt affected.. i DOUBT anybody will find these 9 minutes to be eternity, unless you are deliberately trying to downplay the find. This is no DEEP RED or other films where longer is not always better.

Good, I look forward to seeing it, don't listen to the whiners who only want the short version despite never seeing this. This is big news for genre fanatics.

If I'm reading Walt's comments correctly, the extra scenes weren't discovered separately - they're integrated into the element they found, so this can't be an "extra". I hope this doesn't turn into a longer cut vs. shorter cut argument

Yes, the footage is part of the original negative (titled THE BURNING) and the optical track labeled THE BURNING matched it. The new scene flaws with the other scenes seamlessly with music and all. so this has to be the original intended cut before Film Ventures cut it to fit into 4 reels is my guess,.

No argument from me. I just know I'm already a fan of the 82 min cut, and it's not like the director of DGITH (Joseph Ellison) is Steven Spielberg or something.

But Walt says the extra scenes don't hurt the pacing of the movie, so I'll take his word on it.

Honestly, it does not, and most wont even know its there, and this is coming from someone who saw this back in 80, and many times after.
