I voted for the 705, 'cause the 805 wasn't listed. based on CC's sale price on the 805, it's cheaper than the 91. No way I can drop that kind of bank on a receiver, so when I upgrade (hopefully this year), it'll prob. be the 605.

I voted 705, but for the price difference I would probably take the 805 if I were making the purchase.

its a tough choice. at one time i was going to buy the pioneer elite 92 model, but price is dictating which one i get now and the $379 onkyo 605 @ amazon is a pretty sweet deal right now. i wish would have been home when CC had the 805 for $629, i would have snagged it, but it was only up at that price for a real short time. i know i can get a pioneer 92 for about $850 shipped. what is the 705 & 805 going for these days? anyone have any deals they know about? does amazon sell the 705 & 805?
I wouldn't toss the Yamaha out yet. It's more expensive, but I think the Yamaha will give you a cleaner, more enveloping and engaging surround sound experience than the Onkyos. It offers extended frequency response (10 - 30000 Hz) on all inputs for increased headroom and transparency, which better covers the frequency range offered by Blu-ray, SACDs, and DVD-Audio. It also has Burr-Brown 192kHz/24-bit DACs on all channels for high quality decoding. The Yamaha's are built like tanks and offer a ton of incredibly clean power and detail.

If you do go with Onkyo, I'd avoid the 605 and go for the 705 or 805. I think the 605 still scales down 1080i broadcasts via HDMI to 720p. Since most HD programming is transmitted at 1080i, that can be very problematic.

I traded in my onkyo 605 for my Yamaha 661 after about a week, and I couldn't be happier. I doesn't decode the HD codecs, but my devices decode them anyways. The 605 couldn't post process 5.1 sources into 7.1 sound, which really bugged me. It might just be my ears, but I am slightly happier with the sound from the yamaha. Either way, I don't think you can go wrong, but I personally would put the 661 above the 605.

Default Test....is this thing ON?

Onkyo makes a great cheap product in the entry level. But to compair it to an Elite? Take your Onkyo down to your an Elite dealer. Have him hook it up on the same system an Elite is on. Listen to yours first, and then on the Elite. Make sure you bring your music and movies you know well. Do the same for both. Let your ears figure it out then get back to me....evil grins.

Of those three I would go with the Pioneer Elite.
If you were thinking of the TX-SR875 or TX-SR905 then I'd go with either of those ovver any of the other new receivers with the exception of the Denon 4308CI and Elite 94.

i know these other receivers are fantastic, but as stated in the first post i was trying to buy the best one i could for a lower budget. did not want to spend more than say $700-$800. i know there are plenty of great receivers out there over those prices, but trying to stay within a budget here. thanks for your input anyways
