To be different, they should have whoever plays the mermaid roam freely under the sea sans the seashell bra. Why would she need it? They have no need for undergarments from man's world! I think this would be a very tasteful touch of realism!

I'm sure Dec from Ant & Dec would find her very touchable.

Most would see it as gratuitous, and Disney doesn't want that kind of controversy.

And this is the mentality that keeps me from watching "kids" movies.

I meant that unlike the mermaid in Splash, Ariel had an ingrained level of innocence, and didn't need to flaunt her body for attention. Besides, the character's supposed to be a 16-year-old sea princess, with very little experience on the surface world. Being naive and a little childish is part of her charm, given her background and situations.

Plus, that was an "80's PG", back when you could get away with stuff that would earn an R rating today, like naked boobies.

Disney Officially Sets Live Action Little Mermaid Movie!
By Silas Lesnick on August 16, 2016

Rumored for some time, Walt Disney Pictures is moving forward with a live action Little Mermaid movie!

Word broke back in May that Walt Disney Pictures was potentially eyeing their 1989 animated hit for the live action treatment. Today, it seems that those plans are coming to fruition as Deadline reports that a live action Little Mermaid is, indeed, on the way. What’s more, the studio is pairing Lin-Manuel Miranda and Alan Menken to create a blend of old and new songs that will be featured in the upcoming big screen version.

Disney’s animated The Little Mermaid made over $211 million at the box office and became a bestseller on home video, popularizing songs like “Under The Sea” and “Part of Your World.” Based on Hans Christian Andersen’s Danish fairy tale, it tells the story of a 16-year-old mermaid princess named Ariel who longs to be human.

Universal Pictures and Working Title have also been in development on their own Little Mermaid project with Chloe Grace Moretz set to star and Rebecca Thomas directing from a screenplay by Richard Curtis.

Miranda, who will also produce the live action Little Mermaid alongside Marc Platt, has a number of upcoming projects with Disney. He’s providing songs for this November’s animated adventure Moana (from original Little Mermaid directors John Musker and Ron Clements) and he’s part of the cast of the upcoming Mary Poppins Returns. Set to star Emily Blunt in the title role, the film will soon begin production in England for a December 25, 2018 release.

The live action Little Mermaid joins a slate of upcoming live action Disney features that also includes Beauty and the Beast, The Jungle Book 2, Cruella, Maleficent 2, Dumbo, Mulan, Winnie the Pooh, Pinocchio, Genies, Night on Bald Mountain and The Sword in the Stone. A live action Tinkerbell movie starring Reese Witherspoon is also in parallel development to a live action Peter Pan directed by Pete’s Dragon writer and director David Lowery.

Agreed. I didn't care much for the new songs added to the Broadway version, and that's partially because Glenn Slater's a pretty hit or miss lyricist. Miranda is not only one of the best alive today, but he has credited The Little Mermaid as the movie that made him want to pursue music. This has got to be a dream come true for him. Just look at him with Alan Menken in this video:

The Little Mermaid is one of those Disney films that many non-Disney fans have admitted to loving, so I can see this film becoming an absolute juggernaut financially. Beauty and the Beast this March should be a close indicator of what to expect.

With Disney's remake wagon a roll, can we please, please, please finally get the live-action Hunchback of Notre Dame film that's been gestating for about a decade? It was supposed to be a Wonderful World of Disney TV musical, and when that didn't work out, Menken and Schwartz pursued it for American theater. I think now's the time to make it a theatrical film, using the best elements from the animated film, the German stage musical, and the American stage musical.

How the hell is that gonna work? The Tink film is said to be the '53 film through her eyes, but the new Pan film is said to be a retelling of that exact same film. It's either one or the other, they can't make both. I'd rather have none of them get made since no one gives a rat ass about Pan (as WB found out) but, whatever.

Rob Marshall Top Choice To Helm Disney’s Live Action ‘The Little Mermaid’
by Mike Fleming Jr - December 6, 2017 9:32am

EXCLUSIVE: Disney has made Rob Marshall the top choice to direct The Little Mermaid, the live action adaptation of the animated classic musical that will have new songs by Hamilton‘s Lin-Manuel Miranda and Alan Menken, sources said. Miranda and Marc Platt are producing. I’ve heard that Marshall has been offered the movie, and will take until after the holidays to decide.

Marshall, who helmed the Oscar-winning Chicago, most recently directed Mary Poppins Returns, the new installment of another Disney classic which stars Emily Mortimer, Emily Blunt, Colin Firth, Meryl Streep, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Angela Lansbury and Dick Van Dyke. That film is set for release December 25, 2018. He also directed by billion dollar grossing Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides for Disney.

While everyone is buzzing about the overwhelming theatrical powerhouse Disney will become if it acquires the film, TV and international assets of Fox, Disney’s live action division has been putting together some blockbusters in its own right. Nearly done is Aladdin with Will Smith playing the genie, and next up is The Lion King, with Beyonce heading that ensemble. Marshall is repped by CAA.
