Just wanted to warn people - there is a Spanish blu of this movie which seemed like an alternative to the Japanese one.
On one hand it only has the shorter cut of the film, but it did include English subtitles.
Well.
1) The English subs are pretty much unusable, they feel like machine translation downloaded from the internet. (I'm pretty sure I tried to watch a rip of the movie with these exact subs in the past)
2) The image quality seems pretty bad, worse than I remember screens from the Japanese blu looking. The box says "1080p", but I'm not even sure it's the same 1080i transfer as the JP version.

It's such a shame this hasn't been picked up by a boutique BR label yet, considering what absolute garbage they're lovingly remastering and selling these days.
Anyway, this Spanish disc is quite cheap compared to the JP one, that's about the only thing it has going for it.

so, is 1.85:1 the original aspect ratio of the film? (or at least the intended one)

I found out there are Jugger leagues. Somehow, despite the films lack of availability in the HD era, there are enough teams in a few big cities to have leagues. I have to try and see a game sometime.

Umbrella just annouced an uncut 4k, hope it gets a stateside release. My chesp vudu 4:3 stream got updated to hdx earlier this year (havent watched tho)

That's great news! Been waiting for this one for ages! Last saw this on VHS in the early 90s....

My apologies, I misread your question. I was merely saying the correct AR is 1,85:1, but I have no idea for now, if the widescreen is cropped.... Sorry!

Looks like Orbit got their copies in. Won't have this one right away as it's shipping with something else, but it would be interesting to see thoughts on the 4K.

My copy landed in Frankfurt and has completed customs scan.
Soon I'll be able to revisit my most favourite sports epic in 4k!

Finished the movie last night, PQ was good, but maybe a little rough looking. Audio was... not so great, unfortunately. Don't know if it's a source-related issue, but I honestly doubt it. The fault itself is hard to describe. Some crackles, hissing and also weird "wobble" when the score is playing.
Hope it's not a production flaw!

Got mine today. I'm actually ok with it, for the most part.
I do wish the Director's/International Cut didn't have such drastically different color grading (more contrasty, desaturated), but it does look really nice.
The included shorter US cut is, I think, the same 4:3 open matte with original nice natural colors that I've had on the Spanish blu.
The Workprint is the Int cut + VHS-quality inserted scenes, 1h 50 min long.

Wow, I'd given up hope that I'd ever see this in HD. I've loved it since I first saw it in the cinema back in '89.

I thought the transfer was just fine. However I do have an issue with the extras disc. Seems to not play on my Panasonic DP-UB820. However the disc reads on my pc. I asked umbrella if theres any issues with it and they havent heard anything. Not sure what to do.
