As per the Blu-ray.com reviewer, the 3d Route is the way to go here!
2k Transfer upscaling is not true 4k on a UHD 4k disc. It will be slightly sharper and slightly more colorful but overall not much over an already stellar 1080 Blu-ray.
It's a fun movie but not a great movie for an overly repeat watch. With that said....a 3d experience makes it more of a fun repeat to watch especially one with a stellar 3d review unlike its prequel.
Again 3d is the way to go here, at the least, coming from an avid 4k Consumer and Purchaser.
P.S. Im on the ropes with Warcraft though either 3d or 4k... the 3d got a great review still waiting on 4k review!! Plus I haven't seen that movie yet.

There are other reviews up, such as Ralph Potts from AVS. He rated the UHD video 96/100. I try and read about 3-5 reviews before I make my decision on most movies.

Will Best Buy have the UHD on release day in stores and does the digital copy redeem in UHD?

Dunno where you live but my Best Buy in NJ always has plenty of UHD discs on launch day. Dunno the answer to the second question.

It probably depends on where you choose to redeem the code. Since this is Paramount's first UHD 4K Bluray they may not let you redeem the code in UHD through their website but if you chopse to redeem it through Flixster then you stand a far greater chance of getting the UHD 4K version.

The first two Star Treks were Paramount's first.

Oops wasn't thinking of those, did they redeem in UHD or just regular UVHD?

Well, okay, but it's going to be a few years.

I don't actually have a 4K set up yet. I've been buying the 4K packs since they include the regular Blu-Ray anyway, and I'll be set for when I eventually do have a proper set up.

I can tell you what I think of the regular Blu-Ray much sooner, if that interests you at all!

the reviews have me leaning towards the 3d on this one. Blind buying it simply because I was surprised at how much I enjoyed the first. With all of you saying the second is better, my expectations are now higher

Absolutely the way to go. The effects in particular are less convincing in 2D.

4k or 3d may depend on your setup. Some tvs are poor at hdr, but will give a good 3D experience. Everyone has the option to purchase both though. You can sell the one you don't want.

Surprisingly, Walmart has the best price on the 4K....$25.94. I PM'd them at Best Buy.

Best Buy was the only main retailer to get 3D. Best Buy AND Walmart had 4K too. I grabbed both.

On new releases, I still can't decide on 3D v 4K. I like 3D better, but something about passing on 4K doesn't 'feel' right.

These movies are dumb, but gosh are they fun!!
