Unlike most movies, Laika films don't get the same release in Canada that they do in the US... that's why all their previous films (Coraline, Paranorman, Box Trolls) have had different cover art in Canada. Although the discs are usually the same, or at least use the same transfers and have the same extras, eOne usually has inferior packaging. No lenticular slipcovers, etc. For that reason, I've always imported the USA releases of Laika's films.

This time, I don't think eOne is even releasing a 3-D Blu-Ray, perhaps because of the diminishing number of 3DTVs, or some other reason that's made them buy into the idea that 3-D is a dying format. It could also be because this is the first Laika release where the 2D and 3D are on separate discs... so whereas before they just took the US Blu-Ray (which also had the 3-D included) and put it out, this time they would've needed to produce two distinct HD releases (a 2D combo and 3D combo) as well as the regular DVD, and they were just too cheap/lazy to do so. Personally, if they aren't going to release the film properly, I don't think they should even be permitted to buy the rights to distribute the film in Canada, but that seems to be the way it is.

Fortunately I have to drive down to Niagara Falls tomorrow, so I'm going to hop over the border to a Target or Best Buy or something and pick up the proper release.

I picked up KUBO at Best Buy yesterday ....

It came with a nice Lenticular slipcover ,

I have not watched very much of it yet but I stuck it in my region B player and it played fine..... so it looks to be region free.

It's an excellent movie, but the 3D is very mild with some medium shots with the origami.

Anybody in Canada import Kubo and The Two Strings 3D from a half decent place in the US yet?

Amazing movie, but "meh" 3D...

I wasn't as impressed by any depth, save a sword poking out at the end...

Anyone else?

Love the stop motion work!

Stop-motion native-3D always seems to be conservative. The same for Coraline, Box Trolls and in other productions like The Lego Movie, The Book of Life & claymation: Pirates! Band of Misfits. That is why I love LG OLED 3D. Native-3D in all these features become pristine normal viewing experiences..

Since this is currently reduced to $16.99 I finally decided to order it from amazon.

Despite the "weak" 3D, I figured I would get it now anyway as I haven't seen Kubo yet (not even in 2D).

The 2D trailer looks impressive and I am sure I will like the movie even if the 3D presentation disappoints.

I put in a order as well, seen it in the theaters and liked the story so I have been wanting to pick this up for a decent price.

Just received my order today. I can't wait to see it again. I did saw the movie in 3D on the opening weekend. I really love the art style. Now it hit the right price, a must buy for me. Can't wait!

After buying it and watching it now that the price came down the 3d in the movie was a lot better then I expected reading comments on here. The added depth definitely helped with immersion in any case. it wasn't amazing but it was decent 3d that was worth seeing for a $5 difference between the bd and bd+3d.

I ordered a copy from Amazon this week and finally watched it yesterday. The depth was nice throughout the movie. There were so many opportunities for aggressive 3D (the snowstorm, the ocean scenes with the rain, etc.) but the 3D was fairly conservative. There was a nice scene with Kubo holding a sword that seems to come out from the screen.

I loved how dark the subject matter was for this kid's film. Even though the 3D was just OK, I'd say it was a bargain for 16.99 and I'd only watch it in 3D from now on.

Just ordered this from Hamilton books for $5.95. I'll let you know about a slipcover when the order arrives.

off subject but still 'on' subject - I really wish Focus/Universal would release this on 4K UHD with Dolby Vision/Atmos

Ordered from 3rd party Amazon seller (fulfilled by Amazon) new at $10.22, arrived yesterday. No slip. Luckily I'm one of the people that gives zero shits about plastic wrapped in paper. Save the environment and all that

Just revisited this wonderful Oscar winning animated film. The movie is so engrossing and so beautiful. Anyone who loves animation and great story telling should have this movie in their collection. As for the 3D, not the best but it does the job and it is a lot better than I remembered. So lucky to have this gem in my collection.
