Like I said in my last reply, I'll be very happy when we can start doing 4K vs 1080 screenshot comparisons because then it will be far less subjective. Back to Star Trek Into Darkness: the IMAX sequences look very nice, don't get me wrong. But they're clearly not bringing 4K detail. I think the switching aspect ratios enhances the scenes, and it's always nice when you have content that fills the entire screen, but for me it's the HDR that's the biggest improvement for the two Star Trek films. |

Also agree with you regarding BvS. They did a fine job upscaling it (not ruining it with dnr or artificial sharpening) keeping the grain nicely intact, bd100 of data breathing room for mostly fine looking compression which is something star trek could've greatly benefited from, and the excellent hdr grade on its own is almost worth the price of admission. I'd currently put it somewhere in my top ten (out of nearly 40 UHDs viewed to date). |

I don't have any 4K equipment yet but I am thinking about upgrading, though I have not made up my mind yet. I do have the Star Trek Into Darkness regular blu and those Imax scenes looks so stunning that I keep telling myself how much better can this look? So my question for those who owns the 4K version: How much better it is? And is it worth the expenses of upgrading my equipment?

Mad Max Fury Road has the biggest leap in terms of clarity. You guys can complain about it being a 2K DI all you want, but it's true.
Unfortunately the HDR has wildly changed the color palette of the film, which is why I stick with the Blu Ray. It never had a Dolby Vision/HDR release in theaters so there's nothing to reference it to in terms of what the filmmakers may have wanted. The other major issue with the UHD is varying brightness and contrast. From shot to shot in the same they both alter from extreme to dim. It's really weird and super distracting. Revenant is very consistent but not good if you wanna show off the wide color gamut. Tbh we still don't have a movie worthy of being that absolutely perfect reference disc. I suppose The Martian may come closest. |

OTOH, the HDR in both this and Star Trek (2009) is a worthy upgrade. Just don't expect the non-IMAX segments to look jaw dropping and you will be good to go. |

Star Trek Into The Darkness had elevated blacks in the IMAX space scenes. Unacceptable for OLED. It's as if the space scenes used 1% as it's bottom, instead of 0%. 50 brightness is the proper HDR brightness on most of my UHD blu rays, but with this movie, I had to lower to 46.

You guys have me really tempted to buy The Martian EE, STID, and Sicario. The only movie I really want is Sicario because I don't own it and I've been waiting for it to go on sale. I already have The Martian in 3D, and the Star Trek ITTD Wal-Mart steelbook which is still sealed. I need another ticket to see Star Trek, so that's like subtracting an extra $8 for the $70 which is how much it would cost to get these 3 movies before tax. Also I just got my Xbox One S so I can actually watch these. The only thing is that I just watched Deadpool and though I noticed the extra sharpness, I was never really impressed. But I'm pretty sure that's just because of how the movie is... I need to watch The Revenant to see if UHD BD is really worth the extra money, but I'm really tempted to get these 3 movies for about $20 each because of the BB deal, it just sucks I already own 2/3 of them...

I have both of those on 4K UHD. Point Break does look pretty good way better then the Bluray. Heart of the Sea was Awesome in 4K. It is Full Screen which makes it really look awesome.
