Well in that case, add my vote to the tally for a Speed Racer 4k upgrade. And thanks for the info.

(Also, it's kind of weird, me showing up as a "New Member" here, and showing right underneath that I've been here for 8 years... )

It's clear that some people really enjoyed this movie but let's face it, the majority of people who saw it took the red pill.

This is precisely the sort of film that will kill off physical releases. It bombed at the box office for a reason. Just because a small number of people loved it, doesn't mean it will sell very well and make a profit. In order to get people to keep on buying discs they need to focus on releasing films that larger numbers of people actually like. That way they'll buy all necessary hardware and get "invested" in the format, or something like that.

I don't care if they release films that I perceive to be utter sh*te if they're going to sell well but you've got to be a real fanboy here if you think titles like this are going to sell the format to the masses. Let's face facts, even Blu-Ray sales aren't exactly setting the world on fire. There are still recent movies that only get DVD releases and studios would like nothing better than to drop physical releases on any format.

If the studios churn out recent-but-crap releases early on in a format's life it won't end well. It won't be that long before you get statements from studios like: "See? What did we tell you? Physical's dead, man. We did some physical releases and no-one wanted them so that's why we're moving to a streaming-only strategy."

What you're not taking into consideration is the fact that these early releases are being targeted to enthusiasts. There are very, very few 4k players out there, and the majority of the public doesn't even realize that a new format is emerging. The largest studio isn't even on board with it yet. Because of that, these early releases (much like early blu-ray releases, such as Serenity or Ultraviolet) are going to be 1- easy and cheap to transfer, and 2 - visually stunning. The mass market won't even start to jump on new releases until they drop further in price.

With Jupiter Ascending, WB gets an added benefit where they can add a bit more money to the movie's lackluster bottom line. The people who buy it won't just be the fans (of which a few do exist, despite your protests otherwise), but also those who want to show off how awesome their 4k HDR set-up looks.

Deep down, I think you all know that Jupiter Ascending was the best film of 2015. But cinephile credibility must be preserved at all costs!

Speed Racer's "bubble" backgrounds had a 12K resolution.

http://www.awn.com/vfxworld/speed-racer-go-go-go-anime

Quote:
The production, which was based in Germany, had its own in-house stills group called the World Team, headed by Lubo Histrov (visual effects environments art director), whose company, Christov Effects and Design, executed most of the key spherical bubbles in 12K resolution along with creating digital matte paintings and art concepts.
http://www.studiodaily.com/2008/05/s...nime-workflow/

Quote:
After production, Hristov took the files for the selected backgrounds back to Christov Design in Burbank and Bulgaria to recreate elements in full 12K resolution and then sent the bubbles and background elements on to teams in a variety of studios for their shots.
So they can get true 4K backgrounds if they want / have access to the files.

As for the colorspace and bit depth used: https://www.fxguide.com/featured/mach_-a-_go_go/

Quote:
During the shoot, DOP David Tattersall used the Hyper gamma 4 curve in the F23. The Hyper Gamma 4 is type of modified REC709 gamma curve, more like HD than Film. The files on set were recorded into the new Codex store, as 10 bit DPX log files. By using the Codex they could record DPX but still on set monitoring with standard HD monitor but also get DPX files so the vfx team could composite on set. The Hyper Gamma 4 Curve effectively "brings down the shoulder of the cameras response so it still fits in a standard Rec709 video file " explains Libreri.

During actual production, Pacific Title did the data management and F23 SR conform of the images from the shoot. Digital Domain worked in partnership with Pacific Title to create all the colour management profiling for the movie. This lead to the F23 1920 x 1080 images being distributed to all the vendors with a standard Speed racer LUT applied, giving all the vendors the same standard LOG DPX files as a base line.
And the CGI is 1080p (well most of it):

Quote:
The deliverables on the film were 1920 x 1080, but with a safe 2.35 within that. To render sequences, some elements would be much higher resolution such as 4K, but Digital Domain' standard render was 1920 x 1080 with a 10 % over scan to allow some room for camera shakes or minor repositioning.
Again about the bubbles:

Quote:
fxg: What resolution was the HD footage you were supplied and what resolution did you work at?

Mack: It was 2K for the most part, but some of the bubbles were over 10K, because they were stitched panels so they were pretty big.

I too found Jupiter Ascending amazing, even though the story was hard to follow.

Agreed.

While I do wish any movies that have 4K or film originals that had 2K intermediate were redone with 4K intermediate, truth is, if the CG was done in 2K, there is no way to make it 4K without going back and completely redoing the effects, which would take so much time and $ for most studios to avoid doing this.

Even if many of the UHD releases are upscaled from 2K, with the additional color and dynamic range offered by HDR & the WCG available with UHD standard, I can put up with the upscaling.

Resolution is NOT everything:
What most people don't realize is that no digital format has the dynamic range nor the color range of film, (which is why some filmmakers still use film), HDR and WCG offered with the new UHD standard gets us much closer to that of film. (Film has no banding.). I don't even want to hear about 8K...we don't need it, we need HDR and WCG to be used by the studios for all future releases.

That being said, any UHD disc released without HDR & WCG may not actually look better than a 1080p BD upscaled by your UHD BD player.

Yes, the ENTIRE BUBBLE is 12K... but we only see part of the bubble for each frame as the camera is only 'facing' one direction and isn't capturing 360*.

Either way, I think we'd all agree that this could be an awesome disc to see and hear... even if the movie is meh.

That's a very good point!

Jupiter Ascending to me is one of those 'so bad, it's good movies.' I'll probably pass on the 4K version, happy enough with it in 3D.

This is one of those movies that I did not care for when it came out but now I'm thinking of getting the 4K version.

Yes, same here. This site is now showing that it is out of stock. Also, Best Guy does not show it anywhere near me in Atlanta area, so maybe the release was delayed?
