It's clear that some people really enjoyed this movie but let's face it, the majority of people who saw it took the red pill.
This is precisely the sort of film that will kill off physical releases. It bombed at the box office for a reason. Just because a small number of people loved it, doesn't mean it will sell very well and make a profit. In order to get people to keep on buying discs they need to focus on releasing films that larger numbers of people actually like. That way they'll buy all necessary hardware and get "invested" in the format, or something like that. I don't care if they release films that I perceive to be utter sh*te if they're going to sell well but you've got to be a real fanboy here if you think titles like this are going to sell the format to the masses. Let's face facts, even Blu-Ray sales aren't exactly setting the world on fire. There are still recent movies that only get DVD releases and studios would like nothing better than to drop physical releases on any format. If the studios churn out recent-but-crap releases early on in a format's life it won't end well. It won't be that long before you get statements from studios like: "See? What did we tell you? Physical's dead, man. We did some physical releases and no-one wanted them so that's why we're moving to a streaming-only strategy." |

With Jupiter Ascending, WB gets an added benefit where they can add a bit more money to the movie's lackluster bottom line. The people who buy it won't just be the fans (of which a few do exist, despite your protests otherwise), but also those who want to show off how awesome their 4k HDR set-up looks. |

Deep down, I think you all know that Jupiter Ascending was the best film of 2015. But cinephile credibility must be preserved at all costs!

Speed Racer's "bubble" backgrounds had a 12K resolution.

I too found Jupiter Ascending amazing, even though the story was hard to follow.
Agreed. While I do wish any movies that have 4K or film originals that had 2K intermediate were redone with 4K intermediate, truth is, if the CG was done in 2K, there is no way to make it 4K without going back and completely redoing the effects, which would take so much time and $ for most studios to avoid doing this. Even if many of the UHD releases are upscaled from 2K, with the additional color and dynamic range offered by HDR & the WCG available with UHD standard, I can put up with the upscaling. Resolution is NOT everything: What most people don't realize is that no digital format has the dynamic range nor the color range of film, (which is why some filmmakers still use film), HDR and WCG offered with the new UHD standard gets us much closer to that of film. (Film has no banding.). I don't even want to hear about 8K...we don't need it, we need HDR and WCG to be used by the studios for all future releases. That being said, any UHD disc released without HDR & WCG may not actually look better than a 1080p BD upscaled by your UHD BD player. |

Yes, the ENTIRE BUBBLE is 12K... but we only see part of the bubble for each frame as the camera is only 'facing' one direction and isn't capturing 360*.
Either way, I think we'd all agree that this could be an awesome disc to see and hear... even if the movie is meh. ![]() |
