Do we really need another thread discussing how people organize their collections?

I have to turn around 5 times and shout "FLIMFLAM JIBBERTIGIBBET!" every time I open a blu-ray, ready to watch a film. I also like to walk around with particularly cold blu-ray discs between my sweaty arse cheeks for about 10 minutes, just to warm them up.
Lastly, I get sexually aroused by green blu-ray covers. The last time I visited my friend, he took out The Incredible hulk. That was a messy evening. Apart from those minor quirks, I don't think I have any other habits around blu-rays. You guys are mental with your crazy alphabetising, though! |

This is how I do it. I used to arrange it alphabetically in the beginning when I used to buy only my favorite movies or blind buy very highly rated ones.
But when my collection got way too big (been buying really cheap Blu-Rays regardless of the reviews), and with limited shelf space, I began to arrange it by categories. Then have the best titles of that category on the shelf and put the remaining titles on the drawer and put really bad blind buys in the binders to really save space. I'll have priorities on different categories, so if there is a conflict, the one with higher priorities will get the title. For example, I have "best picture winner" category that is highest so all title will go there first. And if best picture winner is part of box set, entire box set will be in that category (Godfathers, LOTR) My categories of priorities are Best Picture winners, Disney, Favorite Director, Franchise(have two sequels or more), Animation, Anime, 3D, Foreign Language, then genres. And have separate section for special packaging like collectors box set. Last edited by animefan77; 09-19-2016 at 05:58 PM. |

My DVDs are alphabetical.
Blus are in the order in which I bought them. Drives the wife insane when trying to work out presents: "There's NO LOGICAL ORDER!!!"balock.jpg |

Alphabetical order here. It works the best for me, I find anything else gets too confusing. I make an exception for sequels, like Powaqqatsi will go next Koyaanisqatsi.
Personally I like how this really brings out the diversity in my collection. You get all kinds of movies, different colors/designs and types of cases mixed up in a beautiful rainbow. For example, Big Trouble in Little China being sandwiched between The Big Heat and Black Christmas is a wonderful thing. As for quirks, ticks and habits, hmm. I always wash my hands before I touch anything, which might be somewhat unusual. And when I get a film with a slipcover I always wipe it clean, since it's been out in the open and touched by all kinds of people on its way to me. ![]() Quote:

I have an alphabetical shelf for standard releases, and then a bunch of shelves and cardboard store displays for my box sets, a lot of which are on shelves with books of that movie,.....but I have a LOT of room, this may not be practical for some people.....

Criterions are organized by spine number, because any other way is utterly barbaric.
Everything else is in alphabetical order by franchise or title. |

Here's another weird thing I'm going through: slipcovers. Are they REALLY worth keeping? Just for kicks, the other day, I took the slips off all my Blu-rays on one of the shelves and realized they take up a decent amount of space. I could fit another 2-3 Blu-rays on the shelf with no slips on. Plus it actually looks really nice and much more uniform with no slips at all.
So part of me is like "I could sell off my slips and probably make a good chunk of change" but the other "collector" part of me is like "you can't sell that off, it's part of the product". I guess if nothing else I could just put 'em in a box and store them lol. |

My collection habit stems from how my videos are organized. I keep the DVDs and Blu-rays separate, but for each section I organize them both by purchase date and release date; meaning, I bought a blu-ray from 2007 this year, so it would be the most recent product to shelve in the year 2007 (this applies to my CD collection as well); that's regardless of whether the product is a sequel or part of an ongoing franchise. The only time I alphabetized are my blu-ray TV collection, and that's only because once I bought the beefy box sets, I had to reorganize and the TV stuff just to apply first before general movies.
Only I can categorize them as cluster-y as I explained. |

As an EX-Manager for BLOCKBUSTER VIDEO, I can assure you, a category of "FRANCHISE" is much too broad of a category. Every single title in a FRANCHISE category will always FIT into another category and cause anyone with OCD a mental breakdown. |

As a collector for many years, I have tons of quirks and habits. Although, I think I'm mainly guilty of everything at the store before I buy it. I like to get superb packaging: no dents, creases, slashes, etc. I often go through multiple copies just to ensure the *perfect* copy.
However, I just love having my collection in alphabetical order. I can understand how other collectors divide their collections, but I love being able to just see what movie I have right away. I remember I used to do by category or genre, and found myself having to look in a couple of spots. Haha I have all of my Blu-rays together, all of my DVDs together, and larger boxed sets together. So far that's worked for me. Although, I'm pretty much out of room in my display ![]() We'll see what happens ![]() |

For my system it's mostly alphabetical unless it's part of a franchise, in which case the franchise name is what gets alphabetized. For example take James Bond: I have all of them in J's organized by release order as opposed to alphabetically such as James Bond 21: Casino Royale, James Bond 22: Quantum of Solace James Bond 23: Skyfall etc.
With the Marvel franchise, since it's kinda extensive, I've got it broken up in the MCU and MTU (again, in release order but keeping the series seasons all together). |

I won't make the same hoarding mistake with bluray, that I did with DVD. So many people buy blurays, just to have them. They watch them once, and then they collect dust. Some people buy them, and never even open them.
So my rules are, I will only buy a movie on bluray if I absolutely love it. And only if I plan to watch it at least 5 times within the net few years. That's my main criteria. I don't care how what percentage it got on rotten tomatoes. Or if it make $2 billion at the box office. I don't care if it's on the AFI list. Or if it's a "classic" that everyone must own. I also will never buy a bluray, just to "upgrade" an existing DVD that I have. But most of them I only ever watched once, or haven't watched the DVD in years, and they're simply collecting dust. |
