No disrespecting Bruce Lee in this one.

It was a bit of that going on in Master Z.

Caught this tonight thanks to one cinema in Birmingham still screening it (Odeon Luxe if any Brummies out there are interested), and I have to say that this is just a terrible, terrible film. All of Wilson Yip's melodrama excesses, jingoistic browbeating, and inherent xenophobia just flood out from ever single pore of his swety direction. The action and the performance of Donnie Yen and a good cast of veteran and new stars managed to rein things in and steady the ship as the sequels to Ip Man got worse and worse, but nobody can save Ip Man 4. Thank GOD it's the final entry!

I watched it yesterday myself. I thought it was decent. It had flashes where it felt like the previous films, but it was definitely the weakest film in my opinion and the one that felt the most unnecessary. The film's structure feels pretty messy, and it lacks any great set-pieces like the others. I do have to give credit to Donnie Yen, who has consistently performed his role to high standards, and over these 4 films created a modern day cinematic hero.

I felt like the film wasted an opportunity to showcase Bruce Lee and his relationship with Yip more. They barely are on screen together, and the previous films really made it seem like they were building up to something grander than we got. At least Lee isn't treated like a complete carricature like in OUaTiH.

Having re-watched the previous three movies before this one. The first is far and away the best, and I'm probably in the minority but I actually enjoyed the third one than the 2nd.This 4th film very likely have the least replay-value. Action seemed to be lacking compared the others, though we are a little more variety in style thanks to the different schools shown, and as well as Scott Adkins intense style.

I do have to give special notice to the young actress Vanda Margraf, who plays the character Yonah. She is really beautiful, and has potential. I can definitely see her being a future star, either in HK, Hollywood, or both.

3/5

Now I'm wising that Universal Entertainment would release a box set with all four movies on Blu. Any chance of that? I know they previously did the first three, but it's out of print.
