For some reason I like this movie. Was it pretty much pointless? Yes. But I'll get it to complete the psycho collection. Hope they give it a new scan or at least that it's not DNR'd to death like what's available now.

It was pretty close.

...at least from what I remember.

Well, for the most part it was. Aside from those weird inserts of storms and cows, etc. The shots and scenes all match up.

Like I said earlier, I already own it as part of the box set from Australia and I'm kind of glad to have it because while I think it's generally a bad movie, it does have great value as a curiosity. Plus having it as a set already makes it a little easier to swallow than if I'd have to pay $25 to own it individually.

Yeah, but then adding those inserts basically threw the "shot for shot" thing out the window. It was a dumb inclusion, that served zero purpose other then to undermine the point of the "shot for shot experiment"

Was thinking the same thing. If there ever was a less popular film SF selected to release, I'd like to see it.

That said, I don't COMPLETELY hate Psycho '98..

They're scraping the bottom of the barrel with this one. It was going to come out at some point, may as well just get it over with now. I remember the Psycho completists requesting this movie on BD anyway, so at least there's some sort of market for it. I hope they produce some more special features that give us a more critical and scholarly look at this film and it's place in cinema history.

The movie itself is an interesting curiosity, if nothing more. If they really wanted to remake Psycho, they should've just done a closer and more modern adaptation of the original novel. It wouldn't have been that necessary either, but it would've served some purpose other than "let's see how closely we can copy a classic movie."

Vince Vaughn was laughably bad casting, but I think Anne Heche was worse. She turned Marion into some weird pixie airhead that you almost look forward to see murdered in the shower, as horrible as that sounds. Maybe it was on purpose, but she came across as more mentally unstable than Norman. Maybe I'm just thinking of Anne herself.

I enjoyed Julianne Moore and William H. Macy though. Their talents were severely wasted. I did love the jump scare with Moore in the house bedroom too. I actually thought it was more effective here than the original.

What I don't get is how this movie cost $60 million. Adjusted for inflation, that's 14 times the cost of the original. Was it the cast that cost so much? Rights?

So now my Psycho collection can be fully upgraded to Blu-Ray. I thought I'd be happy enough just keeping the remake on DVD, but I might bite on the Blu-Ray to be a completionist.

Though I truly doubt it would happen...I would LOVE if they got the cast to do some interviews to talk honestly about their views of the film prior to making it, when it came out, and now about two decades later.

That would be awesome.

I will kick my ass until the day I die for watching this garbage prior to seeing the original masterpiece.

And I thought I was bad for having seen Psycho II before the original.

I watched this on DVD just a few weeks ago, and I'm pretty sure it is. It's not that bad, probably because it's is the same as such a classic great movie it's difficult to,find it totally shit as some do.

Just can't get VV as Norman, too used to him as a comic rather then a straight actor/character.

You know what? They tried. I'm thinking it's an experiment that COULD have worked in the hands of a different director and some actors who were right for the roles instead of their marquee value (and in hindsight that cast is so ridiculously 90s now). I'm not really a fan of Gus Van Sant and I find much of his pseudo-arthouse films pretty bland. Somebody with a better knack for thrillers and/or dark comedies like Brian De Palma might have been able to pull this off.

I guess I'm 1 of the few that enjoyed it. I thought Vince Vaughn was great. This and Clay Pigeons were 2 of his best.

Why? Tony Scott's no longer with us and we already have a 2-disc DVD's worth of pretty great features.

I'm not all that interested in Psycho (1998) all by itself but I do find it interesting. What I would like is a Shout! set of Psycho II / III / IV / (1998). Throw in a bonus disc with that "Bates Motel" TV movie and the contents of the Psycho Legacy DVD and that'd be aces.
