Because the plot actually centered around Christmas. Gizmo was a Christmas present and the entire movie is filled with Christmas related atmosphere. Trees, lights, snow, Christmas carols, and Phoebe Cates' incredibly dark backstory.

No, not really, and I struggled with whether to include Gremlins. At least for me, Gremlins has more of the feel of a Christmas movie than Die Hard or Lethal Weapon.

I suppose. I personally don't see what is so much more Christmas about Gremlins than Die Hard. I put both on my list so I find both acceptable, but not one more than the other. Die Hard has....

Christmas trees
Christmas party
Christmas is mentioned in several lines of dialogue
Christmas music is used in spots
Christmas hat is worn by a dead guy

As I said I have both in my lists. I see the term Christmas movie different than many here seem to. I just didn't see why Gremlins was more Christmas.

The plot centered around Gremlins. The gift could've been given for a birthday. All the rest you listed is ancillary stuff that doesn't make it more Christmas (Snow?).

You know what nevermind. This list is just for fun and I don't want to go down the nitpicky road. I'll just list what I feel are Christmas and things will fall how they do. I could argue the Die Hard/Gremlin thing all day, but this is just a fun thread. No need to derail.

I agree with that. My two "non-traditional" Christmas films were Home Alone and Gremlins and for me at least... they feel a lot more like Christmas than Die Hard or Lethal Weapon.

I've watched Die Hard on Christmas before so I don't have a big problem with people including it, but I do find it disheartening to have close to entire lists of films that simply have Christmas in the background and not the actual subject matter....

I have to admit I was hoping for more actual Christmas movies in the lists, lots of traditional examples aren't doing that well right now. On the other hand, lots of lists are still open and we have more than a month to go. There's no doubt a part of the participating members feel the same way and vote for the 'real' ones. Good hope.

Personally, I wanted to support Batman Returns and Gremlins as Christmas movies for specific reasons. BR has always resonated strongly with me as a gothic tragedy of sorts, and I think the Christmas setting suits the film like a hand in a glove. Gremlins, sorta similar, the Christmas setting gives it a bittersweet flavor imo. If they shouldn't count, let me know.

What do y'all think about Edward Scissorhands as a Christmasy movie? That's another one I might vote on, but its relevance might be a little scant as well.

Gremlins and Batman Returns count. Personally I don't see anything that has something to do with Christmas in any way when it comes to Edward Scissorhands ... for that would be the same as including Frozen or Mr. Poppers' Penguins, makes no sense ... But, then again, Edward Scissorhands is the story why it snows on Christmas. While there's nothing else in the whole movie that reminds us of the holiday, nothing at all. I want to say 'no', but it's a tough one.

Sounds fair. I just remembered the snow bits and the fairy-tale tone, but it's been a while. Wasn't sure if Christmas or just wintery.

Gremlins opens with a Christmas song.

The Gremlins go caroling.

Christmas is all throughout the story.

There is more Christmas throughout Gremlins than most of the movies in this thread. It has probably been a long time since most have seen it. If you were to write a synopsis of Gremlins, or a decent review, I am sure Christmas would be mentioned several times.

[Show spoiler]
1.Emmet Otter's Jugband Christmas
[Show spoiler]I remember watching this for my first time in 1982 when I was 6 and I've loved it ever since. This was a favorite of mine and my mom's and we'd watch it together every year even when we were on opposite coasts. It's hard to watch it and not get choked up now that she's gone, but it's a part of me and us, and I have to be thankful for the moments we shared together.

2. A Christmas Vacation

[Show spoiler]

3. A Christmas Carol (1951 with Alastair Sim)

4. Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer

5. A Charlie Brown Christmas

6. Frosty the Snowman

7. Die Hard

8. Elf

9. Gremlins

10. A Christmas Horror Story

11. Trading Places
12. Krampus
13. A Christmas Story
14. When the Grinch Stole Christmas (original animated)
15. A Christmas Carol ('84 with George C Scott)
16. The Ref
17. Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang
18. Bad Santa
19. Scrooged
20. Silent Night, Deadly Night
21. Black Christmas
22. Just Friends
23. The Santa Clause
24. Jingle All the Way
25. The Family Man

My list is complete for now, but it may change a bit after I watch a handful of these again. The top 10 is solid and won't be changing.

I loved your personal touch above and in your list.

However, the following titles are short movies and can't be included :

- A Charlie Brown Christmas. (I love it too)
- Frosty the Snowman
- The Grinch (animated)

Ah, I didn't catch that stipulation, but I'll revise my list within the next few days. Sucks though. Lol

Edit: My list has been revised.

I know, esteban pointed it out to me the other day and I've already revised my list. Notice my edit remark in the post you quoted.
