I kind of agree on Stagecoach. This genre could get really murky so I will leave that one off. I am, however, amending my list to include Hell or High Water. IMHO, that film did have a real "road" feel to it.

Yeah that's what I was thinking regarding Stagecoach. It's harder because this isn't a concrete genre, but if you include Stagecoach, then you could include stuff like The Searchers and The Hateful Eight.

The Hateful Eight isn't even close to Stagecoach. The entire movie of Stagecoach is traveling. The Hateful Eight is what? Like the first 15 minutes?
But whatever, your thread, so I'll edit mine.

I have a western 'Westward The Women' in my list. It might not involve driving or a road of such but the whole movie is about the journey travelling to the west and all the pitfalls they go through to get there. It's as much a road movie as something like 'Planes, Trains & Automobiles' or 'Midnight Run' or 'The Road' regardless of the genre.

There are a lot of westerns that are about trips across expanses of the country from one place to another. In addition to Stagecoach and Westward The Women, to name a few:

The Searchers
Red River
The Way West
Wagon Master
The Wild Bunch
The Outlaw Josie Wales
Unforgiven
3:10 to Yuma (both versions)
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
True Grit (both versions)
Ride the High Country
The Far Country
Northwest Passage
The Professionals

I could go on but you get the idea.

Here's a thought. How about another genre: Top 10 "Road" Westerns.

Yeah it seems like a common theme in westerns. I mean you could call Lawrence of Arabia a road movie by that meaning. But those films don't narrow it down enough. I mean Jasonic can include the film, but I feel like if you make it too broad than most adventure movies could be classified as road movies.

The way I see it, you don't need a vehicle to hit the road. If so, some popular and typical 'Road Movie' choices in the lists above would be invalid. A 'Road Movie' is a movie where the character travels during most of the movie and it focuses on that journey itself and -mostly- the mental journey the characters go through. They do not require cars and / or official roads.

Also, Stand by Me is one of the top choices in the 'Road Movies' articles on many movie related sites.

Well, I've already excluded North by Northwest in which some others have brought up, so I'm not stingy about needing to keep it. I just felt that it was much more in line with the idea of a road movie than any other western examples that you mentioned, but I understand your point.

I will take 'Westward The Women' out then and add 'Hard Core Logo'.

Agreed. "Road Movie" can be taken to be a broad definition in scope. I did include North By Northwest but I can also see why some would not consider it to fall within the genre.

Was just at the library, looking at a book "100 Road Movies" and was reminded of Wild Strawberries. I've now replaced Stagecoach with that.

Nice! That's a good one, was Stagecoach in that book out of curiosity?

Nope.

I watched Vanishing Point earlier, and struggling whether I should include it or not. Still trying to pinpoint how much I liked it. Definitely a worthy film though.

I don't know if I know 20 of these things but let me build a list over time (ill rank em later)

Lord of the Rings: The fellowship of the Ring.
Finding Nemo
Cars
Finding Dori
Mad Max Fury Road
The Way
I just edited the original post to include that general adventure films aren't included, such as Lord of The Rings, Lawrence of Arabia, etc.

These are all fantastic picks but I'm not sure The Searchers works.
