The rock music I love best is mostly from the 70s (peaking in 1973) - mostly prog rock, but also various alt/country (eg., Guy Clark) and other stuff (eg., Nils Lofgren). But I find it hard to be interested in contemporary rock bands - somehow it all sounds like I've heard it before, or I just don't like the sound. That's fair enough - I'm in my fifties and today's rock is probably not aimed at me

What I have found more rewarding in recent decades is the work of female solo artists, from Bjِrk onwards, including Brandi Carlile, Anna Ternheim, Laura Marling and Aimee Mann. They all seem to be putting out top quality music.

Can't rely on the radio much anymore. I haven't even listened to it in years, save for the station which plays the older 70s, 80s, 90s rock.

I think nowadays it behooves listeners to find their niche and listen into it with other tools other than the radio. For whatever odd reason, even though my tastes are all over the place, the radio never plays the stuff that truly moves or soothes me.

Metal--as I know it--never seems to get airtime where I'm at. Sure, classic hair metal, older Metallica songs, and other stuff get played ad nauseam. But I have no idea if Metallica's new album had any air time. No idea if Korn's new album had air time. Both aren't too shabby though. What about Otep's new album? Does anybody even know about her and that crazy "Royals" cover she did? What about Tarja Turunen--the most heavenly voice I know of in metal? Two new albums back-to-back in 2016, but I'm be shocked if any of those songs were played on the air or on TV (which is a shame, her cover of "Goldfinger" is phenomenal). New albums by Lacuna Coil, Drowning Pool, Rob Zombie, Dope, Alter Bridge, Xandria, Delain, Epica, Megadeth, Celldweller, Blue Stahli, NIN, and more--most of these delivered. In this niche, I'm just rockin' out all the time.

That being said, I'm not liking where Linkin Park's upcoming single is going.

I've followed all of this merely because I see them putting out new work and will buy it. Sometimes I'll catch it following artists on Bandcamp or Facebook. Sometimes I'll discover something on Youtube or 8tracks. Some things, I've discovered from Blu-Ray.com. Spotify and Pandora are options, I know, but I don't use them much.

There's way more ways to find and follow music now, and the variety is there. The talent is there. It's just not finding its way to radio, because radio wants to sell something else. I don't know if they're shooting for mere feeling, or style, or finding names that sell. Whatever it is, I think it leaves many many niches unfulfilled.

^^^ If I am jumping on anyone in my message, my jumping is all over those who obviously didn't take long to get bored I guess you could say with my newest favorite. In my opinion, Billy Joe Royal is the most over looked singer in music history. If the powers that be had not lost interest in him so fast, I most definitely would have found him a whole lot sooner.

God bless you and his family always!!!

Holly

P.S. In other words, y'all can keep your One Directions and your Justin Biebers. My heart is forever the property of my late beautiful precious.

If you could dial back the strange a little bit, and discuss others besides your precious (sounds like Gollum), maybe we could have discussions with you. There must be other artists you listen to, either now, or in the past. Who were they?

No Alan Jackson!

C'mon now! You must've just accidentally forgot to list him.

^^^ Thank you for what you say here. Yes, I am no different than any other person who shares their favorites with everyone else in the world. I guess that you can say that James and Billy Joe are my One Direction members or whoever the biggest rock act is these days.

I love him too, but I love those that I listed more.

God bless you and him and my favorites always!!!

Holly

P.S. Actually there are only a handful of acts who have been labeled country that I don't have any interest in: Dixie Chicks, Carrie Underwood, Kasey Musgraves, Kelsi Ballerini, and Maren Morris. The rest of the planet can have what would have been my share of them.

^^^ I'll take that as a compliment.

God bless you always!!!

Holly

P.S. Oh and in my opinion, what I do online where Billy Joe is concerned is no different than anyone else who goes on and on and on about their favorite people. His not being here anyone more may be the only thing that puts me in a class by myself and its because of how well known his name is not compared to those like Elvis, Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, etc. What is a person supposed to do when there are people like that to compete with other than all that they can do?

Don't let it bother you. I totally understand where you're coming from in you're thinking. But she's not really hurting anyone in her posts. People do much more unhealthy stuff on the internet.

She loves James Otto and found BJR late in her life. Her love and affection for both of them is immense and she loves to share it with others, on occasion.

Just live and let live, love and let love, and keep on rockin' to the beat of our own drums!

What happened to music? Well there is a lot more options and variety to the listener now with online services... Youtube and Bandcamp is what I use to find new music - I don't have much 'mainstream' taste in music. Two recent songs I like from albums I discovered and love that would probably never make it onto radio:

YZYX - Dracula's Jam [Timelapse E.P. album]

AdyS - Edge [4321 album]
