All HDR is encoded in the rec.2020 space. Most masters are done at P3, so they just map the P3 inside 2020. But this had a full 2020 Dolby Vision master. So it is likely that the disc will have that full 2020 gamut as well, whether or not it has DV on disc. But that's just my assumption, or hope that this will be the first UHD BD we get with full 2020 color.

True there is a visual upgrade of sorts, but in fairness even most reviews seem to say it's the HDR element on a lot of 4K Blu-ray releases that offer the most noticible difference. An upscled 4K release is exactly what it is,an upgrade but not what we are being promised by the format. |

I believe with a proper home theater setup, the difference between Blu-ray and UHD BD will be night and day. And your eyes will bleed. |

Quick question, does Warner Bros 4K release come with Slipcovers?
I am torn between getting this or the 3D Blu-ray. Or I might get both. |

Hmm. Unless you're willing to wait till August for the Japanese release, then I'd say go for the US versions.
Or by some sheer miracle, the Japanese version has Dolby Vision... I know. Fat Chance. |

Exactly. Render times for CG are very long. It would be very expensive and double the production time if they had to create and render a 4K animated film. (as computing power gets faster, that should change eventually) Furthermore, for the same reason as animation, VFX for movies are also rendered at 2K. Even movies that were filmed in 4K will include 2K-upscaled VFX. (i.e. The Martian 4K) I think one of the few recent films to have 4K footage AND 4K VFX was the Tom Hank's film "Sully". The VFX was mainly for the airplane crash scene, while the rest of the film had minimal VFX. A movie like Avengers, which has VFX is almost every shot, would have to use 2K VFX in order to have the VFX rendered in time for the film's release. Technically, if the VFX kept all thier project files in order, they could re-render all the VFX out at 4K for a future release, but the production cost of that may not be worth it. (for the slight sharpness that native 4K VFX would give to upscaled 2K VFX) |
