Maybe it's not pathetic, maybe it's just that there simply isn't as much extra fine detail or HDR-ness on GoodFellas' film stock as you were hoping, in comparison to modern, native 4K material.

No, it is truly pathetic...even unwatchable. I don't always go by or agree with the reviews on this site, but the 1.0 4K rating it was given was absolutely right on target. I plan on watching ONLY the blu-ray from now on.

TWBB did not use a digital intermediate.

The reviewer says it's not unwatchable. The 1/5 score may be a bit harsh considering his comments. Nonetheless the review has put me off purchasing the UHD because written reviews and comments are all I have to go on at this point since I don't have a 4K monitor to compare screenshots.

There's nothing yet to take UHD screen captures anyway. I am still waiting on an external UHD drive myself and for PowerDVD to support it.

Well, that's where the reviewer and I disagree. But, if you think the words "not unwatchable" are good enough to disregard all of his other highly negative comments, then you are an eternal optimist.

How will the screen captures work with HDR? Seems like a translation issue looking at the caps on various monitors.

4K monitors don't have HDR anyway.

Goodfellas UHD looks fine, not great but solid. Unforgiven should look incredible.

Right, but are the UHD BD screencaps going to have HDR in them though? So they will get converted to SDR because of the monitor. As we know, converting HDR to SDR is going to vary. It seems like it's going to be harder to judge color and shadow detail with UHD BD screencaps.

The detail and film grain rendition is better on the UHD BD watching on my front projector with about 3K resolution. I cannot judge the color and shadow detail yet as the Oppo needs to improve the SDR conversion.

The actual quote is "Is the UHD unwatchable? Not at all. As with many video phenomena, the eye quickly adjusts to the presentation, and the elevated black levels become routine. But having watched Goodfellas repeatedly on both UHD and the 25th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray, I find the Blu-ray to be a better viewing experience. ... While the 4K image could no doubt be re-graded with accurate black levels, it is uncertain whether and how much the corrected image would offer any meaningful improvement over the Blu-ray."

[Tough to push UHD for titles that most people won't buy if they give you the lesser option that most people are happy with. When even blu-ray enthusiasts on this forum aren't interested in the UHD, that's a sure sign the format will fail.[/QUOTE]

The fact that I would have to buy a new tv, player and amp, that is quite a big financial outlay. I have gone through VHS and dvd, I fully embraced bluray, but this is as far as I go for physical media. Due to my age and failing eyesight, I probably wouldn't see much difference between blu and UHD anyway.

Okay, you all win: it's without a doubt the greatest UHD in history. Please, everyone, go out and buy it and do so with that knowledge. You won't be disappointed.

Fine, my ass.

It does look fine, your hyperbole is wrong. I assume you've seen the disc, but if you haven't, I dunno why you're crying about it.

It'd be nice if all studios offered a mastered in 4k release alongside the UHD for catalog titles.

Lol don't get butthurt. Disappointing release? Sure. Unwatchable? You're being dramatic. I've sat through Goodfellas on a tiny TV in the early 90s and enjoyed every minute of it.

At least, for people like me who can't/probably won't go 4K, there will be a standard blu release of the remastered disc later in the year. I can wait.
