It's coming, but some Blu-ray.com crew seems to be on vacation?

King Kong and the Hobbit trilogy are just way too over the top and cartoonish in their action scenes for me.

That said, it's hard to deny he knows how to make a movie with proper characters, development and pacing. Skull Island is just a two hour excuse for action scenes, not even in the same ball park (though enjoyable).

I think it's quite easy to dismiss Jackson and his ability for good pacing. He is one of the most guilty people in Hollywood when it comes to unnecessary bloat. Lord of the Rings was masterfully crafted but everything else after? He needs to learn how to trim fat, big time.

I for one am quite a fan of Jackson's King Kong. The amount of time they spend developing the characters before they even reach the island is rarely seen in modern blockbusters. The film feels like a properly epic journey when many expensive action movies feel like an extended Saturday morning cartoon. The extended cut is gratuitous, but I wouldn't change a thing about the theatrical cut (maybe take out the scene where they shoot the bugs off Brody with a tommy gun - but that pit scene overall is incredible).

The Hobbit movies OTOH... bloated is an understatement. But you can tell Jackson isn't too into the work himself. The passion is so much more visible in Kong, the last Hobbit movie feels like the work of a broken man. The EE bonus features basically confirm that.

I've passed on recent 4K mastered bluray knowing this is around the corner. Studios will do that now just like Fox with Independence Day. At least they announced both with latter coming in 4k. Does anyone think that studio will do a new master and then not do a 4K. This is why I passed on this but will get 4K release, passed on recent XXX with Vin Diesel and Jerry Maquire as well as passing on Heat. Both Studios are all in for 4K so makes no sense they'll do a master and then not do a 4k unless they want to gauge sales first

I think King Kong was mastered in 2K. That said, a 4K UHD would be beneficial considering the length of the movie (and all the special features they put on the BD) so we'll get a higher bitrate version of the 2K master which should be very nice for the grain.

I wouldn't count on a Jerry Maguire 4K release anytime soon. The kind of movie it is doesn't make it seem like something *most* people would want to see in 4K. I have a feeling even the sales for the 4K remastered BD weren't good enough to warrant a UHD double-dip in the near future.

Yes I guess The Hobbit films sort of ruined his diet. Both him and the films ended up a bit on the chubby side.

EDIT: I saw this movie in a real IMAX theater back when in 2005. I'm sure the effects will hold up in 4K on even the largest home theaters.

Might've been digital or just blown up 35mm like Revenge Of The Sith, my internet search has turned up conflicting reports but it was shown in select cities.

I didn't know about the 15/70mm release either. I can't remember why but for some reason I ended up having to see this at a $4 second-run back in the day, and even in that relatively crap setting, I remember thinking it was spectacular. Can only imagine how great it would've looked in 15/70.

According to Bill Hunt over at thedigitalbits.com, King Kong 4K Ultimate Edition is timed to coincide with the release of Kong: Skull Island. Day one purchase for both.

Now would it be asking too much for Paramount to release the 1976 version on bluray the same day? I know it's available as an import (which I have) but an official U.S. release is long overdue!

That's what I worry about but the HDR implementation on this particular release is what's going to make this movie look incredible, 2k DI or not. This will "only" be a triple dip for me. I know there's a bunch of quadruple dippers out there (UE) that are not happy right now. I don't think I'll preorder this until I find out who'll have the best edition of Kong: Skull Island first. Here's to a 4k/3D/UHD steel book of K: SI from someone
