Queen of Katwe (2016)

I joined the Disney movie club last month basically to get a couple of their exclusives. This month's selection is this movie directed by a female Indian director Mira Nair. I've seen a few of her films since I really enjoy her directing style. Though I was leery at first because chess is not my thing but this was an engrossing movie. The story is about a young girl raised in the slums whose fortunes rise dramatically when she learns the game of chess. I highly recommend this inspiring story.

Very cool art direction in this film! I actually picked this up on blu-ray last week at Wal-Mart on a whim, so it was perfect timing that you recommended it. I love dystopian stories!

Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953)

Decided to do a "Blonde Bombshell" double feature. I had never seen Jayne Mansfield before and I like her quite a bit, but Marilyn Monroe was in a league of her own. Both films get three and a half stars.

Arachnophobia (1990)

As far as a phobia, it was a choice between heights or spiders and since I try to avoid heights if at all possible, spiders it is. I saw this at the theatre years ago and it's just as creepy now as it was back then.

There are definitely parts of this that are fun to watch for just how bad they are, but make no mistake... it's bad.
If they had fully embraced the ridiculousness of it and made this a comedy, it would have worked wonderfully. This could totally be a sequel to Macgruber - they already have the haircut!

Deja Vu (2006)

I received this in one of my opening packages when I joined DMC last month so I was glad to see it recommended. One of the few Sci-Fi's that I missed over the years. I enjoyed it tremendously. Thank you cinemapile for recommending this movie.

I loved the realistic, scientific approach to first contact. You never see that in movies and it was ridiculously engaging. It was a great recommendation, four and a half stars.
