Collider: A Delightfully Insane Slasher for the Art World
The Playlist: ‘Velvet Buzzsaw’ Is a ‘Final Destination’ Movie Masquerading As A Wannabe Cult Comedy Variety: A tarted-up throwback to a certain kind of trashy ’70s horror movie — à la “Who Is Killing the Great Chefs of Europe?” or “Theater of Blood.” |

Reviews are solid. But, not overwhelmingly positive. Still excited to check this out on Friday.

Any film described as "A tarted-up throwback to a certain kind of trashy '70s horror movie" has my full attention; not sure what to make of that trailer (though Gyllenhaal going OTT looks to be hilarious), but I've got faith in the reteaming of Gilroy/Gyllenhaal/Russo offering up some tasty satire, especially as NIGHTCRAWLER was one of the best films of 2014.

Went to the premiere on Monday and howling through the whole film.
The way I described the trailer to a friend was if Nicolas Winding Refn had decided to remake "The Square" based on an unused mid-2010s Rob Zombie script and, for the most part, was not disappointed. [Show spoiler] is already setting a bar for the funniest scene in a 2019 film.

Just finished the movie, and people should not watch more than the first minute of that trailer. It gives away far too much.
As for the film, I'll give it 3.5 stars out of 5. It kept my attention throughout and the premise is certainly interesting. The performances are good, and wow, what a great cast top to bottom. It felt like something was missing, though. An enjoyable horror film with some good humor. This really was a starring vehicle for Rene Russo, which is nice to see. She almost could have gotten top billing over Gyllenhaal. Velvet Buzzsaw is nowhere close to the same league as the outstanding Nightcrawler. I haven't seen Roman J. Israel yet. |

A movie about the art world was going to have a major uphill battle in even piquing my interest, much less winning me over (The only thing that would have had a harder time is a movie about the equally pretentious and stupid world of fashion). But by reuniting the director and stars of Nightcrawler, it positioned itself as a project at least worth checking out.
Yes, Gyllenhaal is playing it a little too much like a caricature, some of the supporting players like Daveed Diggs and John Malkovich are kind of wasted, and it does seem to end a but abruptly just when it's getting good, but the movie is interesting enough to have kept me entertained. On a side note, if you ever wonder why major stars and directors are doing films for Netflix, this is a perfect example. This is a film that probably never would have been made by a studio for theatrical release. It's a decent watch at home, but it would have flopped at the box office. Netflix provides a place for filmmakers to get their smaller films made and seen. 3.5/5 Luckily I heard that same thing the day the trailer dropped, so I never even watched any of the trailer. All I knew going in was the basic premise, the director, and the cast. |

A pretentious film that is supposed to be critiquing pretentiousness. :|

I agree as well. I think so much is being done now and will be done in the future that we just would never have had the opportunity to see. I am very happy about these new platforms.

Talk about insane! Excellent performances (once again, Jake, even he being hammy worked, and Rene stole the show), superb direction and cinematography (once once again, by Dan and Robert Elswit) and an intriguing, bizarre story, although it doesn't fully hit the mark.
The satirical aspect of the art industry is more entertaining than the horror, which isn't bad, but there's not much to it. 3.5/5 Last edited by Creed; 02-01-2019 at 08:04 PM. |
