Finally broke down and blind bought this one and man do I regret it. It felt more like just a bad movie and not a "so bad it's good film." I wish I could have rented it before hand but oh well. I guess I'm more of a late 80s/early 90s action movie guy. I'm glad it got released for those that do like the film though.

Sorry to hear it. I watched the Blu-Ray for the first time last night (after seeing it previously on VHS and DVD) and writhed with joy throughout. Love me some Wahl, Glicklenhaus and Tangerine Dream. It's dumb, sure, but surprisingly well-crafted.

I finally got around to watching my KL BDs of THE EXECUTIONER'S SONG and THE BURNING BED last week (got 'em during the last KL sale). I had never seen either movie, but read that they're considered two of the finest TV movies of all time.

The presentations are very nice, and they really are remarkable cinema. It was very easy to forget I was watching TV productions. Breathtaking acting, great scripts, fine direction... I'd say that, if TV movies can be included in anyone's "Best of the '80s" list, they'd definitely make my Top 100, possibly even my Top 50. Glad to own them, and I'll definitely be revisiting them... when my heart can handle it.

With the current sale on, I urge fans of brilliant dramatic filmmaking to grab them up.

The Soldier is a film that revels in it's absurdity. It's by no means a good film, but the sheer ridiculousness of the whole thing makes it a fun watch for me.

Yeah, and that skiing chase sequence, starting with the RPG blowing up the ski lift car. The stunt man who jumps out of that thing looks like he narrowly escaped intact. I've always cited the ski chase as one of the greatest (and coolest) action scenes ever. The Tangerine Dream score is really on-point there, the shot design is incredible (those ski-mounted camera angles are memorable) and the occasional use of slo-mo is fantastic. Idiotic as the film can be, it contains some knockout action scenes that make it a genre classic.

Kino releasing a 4K? I can't imagine they would release an updated blu ray just for a special feature. Perhaps Arrow, Scorpion, or Shout Select

I really hope for a bluray release in Germany. Last DVD release is from 2008. My father worked at the set at that time. In the scene in which the Porsche is flying through the wall he was responsible for preventing and stopping people to go out on the street from the buildings during the car chase. He taped it on VHS from TV, years later I bought him the uncut DVD, so another update to bluray would just be perfect

Hopefully, McBain (1991) - starring Christopher Walken and Michael Ironside - is the next release. James Glickenhaus told me (via Facebook) about a blu-ray release from Synapse Films, back in 2011! It never materialized.

Fingers crossed.

This isn't about The Soldier blu-ray but figured fans of the film would be interested to know that the soundtrack has finally been released on a new Tangerine Dream 10-CD boxset titled Pilots of Purple Twilight: The Virgin Recordings 1980-1983.

While the entire boxset is quite pricey (and I already have many of the originally released CDs of the included albums) I am only interested in The Soldier soundtrack as I've wanted that since I first saw the film in the mid-80s on cable.

Surprisingly, however, "The Soldier" Original Soundtrack Recording has been released as a standalone via streaming by itself and it is glorious. It's everything I've wanted for 30+ years! (Except for a standalone physical release which may come in the future after the initial release of the aforementioned boxset.)

I figured I can't be the only one who is a big fan of Tangerine Dream and the score for The Soldier so I thought some of you in this thread might also find this of great interest.

GOOD NEWS:

Synapse Films finally answered me:

The HD transfer of McBain (1991) has been properly done, they must choose a release date for it.

Well, that's something at least.

Though if it's another $45 steelbook, they can forget it.
