I bet if you asked most people to name who directed the Dark Knight Trilogy they couldn't tell you. Same goes with Scorsese and Coppola. People who frequent movie boards are a minority.
Bingo.

The idea that, for instance, Fincher is a household name, as some have posited, is insane.

I don't think Jackson's a household name. His movies obviously are but I doubt the average person would know his name.

There are people out there that will tell you Walt Disney directed everything from Snow White and Pinocchio up to Mary Poppins. If they know any Disney director at all it's probably John Lasseter, most likely from coverage of Pixar's technical achievements.

Martin Scorsese is associated with gangster movies in the public consciousness. Goodfellas happens to be one of his most famous of his movies. If you asked people to name a Scorsese flick that would be the one that pops up the most.

I'd say Age of Innocence.

I mean, with a portfolio like that, it'd be a sin to not think Scorcese when you hear these movies.

I liked Wolfgang Reitherman, who did Sleeping Beauty, 101 Dalmatians, The Jungle Book and The Sword in the Stone.

It's also a sin when you don't spell it correctly. "Scorsese"

All very true, even if I think GF is the movie that most regular people tended to notice him for. Not to disparage the other title or meant as sight to their recognition. The reply was to dispute the fact most people couldn't name the director of "Goodfellas".

Him, and Frank & Ollie are the only ones of the Nine Old Men that I can remember their names off the top of my head. People probably wonder what the heck that "old school" scene in The Incredibles is for, without realizing those two helped make Disney what it is.

Heck, millennials' first encounter with Goodfellas was a recurring segment on a cartoon.
