It was ok, I enjoyed it but was disappointed with it at the same time. Definitely worth a watch tho.

Ach this was so close to being a great movie and it was a great movie up until
[Show spoiler] . After that it kind of fell apart for me and I was really disappointed in the conclusion. I did love the first 3/4 though and thought the performances were good and it was very well made. Rich Sommer is a really wonderful actor and his performance was terrific. I struggle not to think of Firewatch whenever I hear him speak though lol, he was really superb in that game. I will probably pick up the German release or the UK one if we get a blu and I'm sure the ending will grow on me but I was initially disappointed with that particular aspect. That said, I do give the film makers kudos for trying something a little different.

Caught this in the theater tonight. Considering how many buckets of blood were spent in Turbo Kid I was surprised there was far less gore from the same creative team about tracking a serial killer. While it balances darkness and humor evenly throughout most of the film it takes a sharp turn to somber by the film's conclusion, partially because it delves into some ghastly actions and revelations that are tonally jarring.
Love the 80's vibe, but by this point in my movie-watching history a retro vibe is not enough to hook me into a film. Thankfully Summer of '84 also has an engaging mystery to carry it. |

Quite the opposite for me. Although I liked it from the start, everything was going in the direction we've seen way too many times. It's the until moment that did it for me. It was a pleasant surprise that way and I was glad they made that choice. That final thought won't let you go for a while ...

they tend to either: 1. keep everyone in modern clothes and certainly with modern hair, acting in fully modern ways and then toss in the random walkman or 80s song here and there and call it the 80s 2.a. go nuts with the clothing, every girl is dressed in full on Madonna every single day or running around school or the mall in a workout leotard and leg-warmers, mixing weird over the top this with that with patterns of glow in the dark this and that in combos of an over the top nature not really seen, etc. and all the guys in some over the top who knows what and with half of them in mullets and the other half flock of seagulls 2.b. just like 2.a. except even worse since they do all that stuff over the top but then they go with nothing but modern zero volume hair for all the girls and nobody has 80s hair at all which is the one thing that actually wasn't an almost every day universality (although I guess having guys with modern hair, that part is arguably closer to the truth than having 50% in mullets and 50% flock of seagulls, mullets were hardly unheard of but just not that crazy common and flock of seagulls barely any guys used that style at all ever, if still not correct; but with the girl's hair it's just so utterly wrong and the second that is wrong there is zero feel of the 80s whatsoever) I find #1 the most offensive followed by 2.b. -------- Even movies like Adventureland that all the critics who graduated HS BEFORE the 1980s and all the Millennial l hipster critics praise for getting it all perfect, not, no even that one got it remotely close. Lisa P was like the only one who actually had 80s hair and who wore 80s clothes (although they over did her clothes, since extremely few girls wore the specialized classic looks of those sorts day after day) and acted 80s at all but then they almost made her seem like the odd one out when she was the only one ever remotely mainstream 80s. And even with her, her type was not really the sort that tended to hang around smoking up summer nights, that was more the metal head/burnout crowd and she didn't seem like that sort of 80s girl. Kristen Stewart had like her every day 90s/00s hair and was always dressed all 90s grunge dingy and wore all these Lou Reed t-shirts and in the extras they said well and of course she wears like Lou Reed t-shirt, what girl in the 80s didn't? And I'm like whaaat? I honestly can't recall seeing a singly girl wearing a Loud Reed t-shirt in the 80s, certainly not at the height of the 80s like in '87. And then they had these total 'it' girl cheerleader types all going nuts that the guy said he played with Lou Reed. And I'm like whaaaat? Honestly, mainstream 80s girls barely had a clue who Lou Reed was for the most part, certainly past the ultra earliest 80s. Guys were running around in long tube socks WITH the stripes and this was supposed to be '87, that particular type of long tube sock was way out of date by '87, those were more 70s and very earliest 80s socks. It was an amusement park in the summer and yet no girls in 80s go-go shorts? cut-off t-shirts? off the arm t-shirts? etc. Everybody was playing records, where were the tapes? CDs? walkmen? This is supposed to be '87 not '77! The cars in the background - where were the Trans Ams? Camaros? Toyotas? Honda Accords? VW Rabbits? Volvos? etc. They had all these top of the class, brainiac, East Coast elite university type kids hanging around all summer smoking up. Almost nobody in the late 80s anywhere near the top of the class smoked cigarettes and weed was not the big thing for that crowd then either. 60s/70s/extremely early 80s kids of that sort, yeah. And then again somewhat more for the mid-90s into the 00s (although the cigarette smoking for that group was fading out again by early 00s). But no way in the 80s, surely not '87. Walk around a top Eastern Elite college in the late 80s and finding someone who smoked cigarettes was rarer than finding hen's teeth. Now sure there was an 80s crowd that did that, the head banger burnout crowd, but that was a very different crowd from the top of the class, elite school type crowd in the 80s. (although, to be fair, the main guy character did go to Oberlin and that was the one place where that might not have been so out of sort, Oberlin did have a lot of the 60s still going on in the late 80s, but barely any other elite school did then). They made it seems like Rock Me Amadeus was like THE cool song of the 80s for the alt crowd. More like it was popular for a couple weeks in a way and then pretty much laughed at and disliked. Of all the 80s pop songs that hit the tops, I feel like that probably had the #1 shortest shelf life. Nobody ever played it after it's time while you'd still hear most other 80s pop hits now and then even a few years later in mix-tapes/radio/etc. And the 'alt' crowd of Lisa P in the movie was actually the mainstream crowd in reality. I think that a lot of critics said it's the only film to perfectly nail the 80s because many critics were sort of very outsider, non-mainstream types and maybe wish the 80s were all hipster alt like this and it's sort of some revisionist fantasy for them/too old and thinking more of THEIR HS and college days/doing modern day hipster dreams wishlist revisionism. To me it seemed like a mix of the late 70s/ultra early 80s/mid-90s/00s, almost anything but '87 other than for Lisa P who did seem like she could fit in '87 (even if the clothing and all was a bit overdone for day after day). I think the problem was the director/write was both too old and hipster-like and the actors too young for anyone to realize all the errors. Apparently the writer modeled it off his own experience, but they were in the late 70s to maybe ultra early 80s. Not to hate on the film too much in general though, just getting on the claims of no other film ever got the mainstream 80s more on spot nonsense. |

regarding the trailers posted here
boo, it looks like the girls all have modern hair, one maybe has a trace 80s hair but otherwise the lack of 80s hair just makes it instantly seem maybe '80-'82 instead of '84 ('84 was the start of 100% full on classic 80s looks and big hair reigned) so yet another one that's gonna drop the ball again for a true classic, main era 80s look even the guys seems sort of a bit off, a little heavy on the more old fashioned 80s shirts and the socks look a little short some looks sort of ok, some a bit off not sure why almost all the most recent 80s set stuff totally messes that up that said it still looks a bit intriguing and at least some bits of 80s stuff so give it a go (even if the lack of true '84 look, especially for the girls, will be annoying and distracting), give the amazon de regular blu a go Last edited by WBMakeVMarsMovieNOW; 09-09-2018 at 06:24 AM. |

Here are some unboxing videos: That's the normal retail release. The limited German set had a release date of 10/5 for whatever reason, and is sold out. Mine shipped on 10/4 from Amazon.de, and should be arriving any day now. I just went with the normal cheap shipping speed, since I've actually had them lose a package that I paid the fastest international shipping for twice before just recently! ![]() Last edited by Katatonia; 10-14-2018 at 05:00 PM. |
