Cex are awful, even the stuff that is genuine is usually in a terrible state. They also have sent me foreign imports in the past too.
They used to be good for some cheap bargains (where the state of the item didn't matter so much) but these days they must monitor ebay or something because their prices are really steep. |

Takes me back to the early 90s, where you bought horror/gore bootlegs which came with poorly photocopied sleeves!
Either that or the classic "2 on a tape" for £12-£18! Back then you had to fabricate your own entertainment... Last edited by CompleteCount; 09-14-2017 at 09:41 AM. |

It is a shame so much of what Cex does is so shady/shitty as without Cex I probably wouldn't have the BD collection I have now. In my financial position BD collecting is not something easily sustained so being able to trade in stuff I am not going to watch again for new movies, even if the amount of money given for trade-in is often less than I originally paid for the movie and so many BDs in CeX look like they've got ten rounds inside a wood chipper, is a wonderful thing for me.

The annoying part of that, is that if you took those to the majority of their stores for trade-in, they'd tell you to f*** off. Their online arm don't seem to care, they just stick BBFC logos to the case and wing them out the door. |

My local stores are full of these poorly printed covers, in colour admittedly.

It's against their own policy that they even sent it out to you it at all. Printed covers aren't to be sold online, only instore where they can be sold as is. The store that sent it out should have cancelled the order.
I can understand your reluctance to return as its OOP, but personally if I'd pay over £16 and it arrived in that condition, I would watch it then return via Collect+. |

It's a weird situation, if Trading Standards have no issue with it, then they'll have no issue with people buying huge pallets of ex-LoveFilm discs from eBay printing off covers and up charging the results? Does anyone see a difference (apart from the quantity)? Both will have accepted a disc only purchase then modified it for future re-sale. What's to stop someone from breaking up a lesser value box set and creating separate covers for re-sale to CeX or elsewhere? Oh, right, Trading Standards.
The biggest issues here are: 1. The customer hasn't been informed that they're buying what is basically a disc-only purchase as they can't see the item itself on-line (and they do sell them on-line). 2. CeX are up-charging the value of a disc-only purchase. An item goes from a couple of quid to £12-15 if it's rare or OPP. 3. At a glance there's no indication that the items photocopied covers from the exterior (in most cases). At first glance, most won't notice. 4. Reports are that CeX won't accept these back for trade-in or sale. So you might be stuck with your item unless you return it. In the case of The Servant, the original was a Digibook, CeX have created something that was never for sale. To be honest, I'd take it back to your local store and see if they'll accept it for trade-in, when they say "No.", whip out your receipt and ask for a refund. But as DaveSimonH posted, they should never have sent it out, but they would have never sold it in-store either unless they marked it down. |

my local CEX-exeter wont take the photocopied cover versions back for trade.
ive heard it several times in store,it really seems to p*** people off. i dont buy online from them and i only buy in store if i can tell its an original cover. i did have to return a collectors edition of BIOSHOCK 2 which had the lp of the soundtrack in because the game had a copied cover and the lp didnt have its sleeve-just loose in the box.i now check carefully before i buy... |

Considering the hoops you have to jump through to sell them stuff I'm amazed they have so much tat in stock.
I sold my Dreamcast and around 200 games over the last few weeks to them. The games were almost all mint, they hadn't seen the light of day for seventeen years. Many hadn't even been played. Some stores pointed out imaginary cracks in the cases, but only when it affected the price paid by 20 - 30 quid. I'd take them to another store and they would agree it was mint and pay 'top dollar'. One shop wouldn't even take a couple of N64 Expansion Pak games because they didn't include the Expansion Paks. I asked how an Expansion Pak would fit in a regular N64 game box with the cart and it just seemed to confuse them. It confused them even more when I pointed out that Donkey Kong 64 was the only one which was bundled with an Expansion Pak and it came in an oversized box. I took it to another shop and they took them no questions asked. One shop logged a couple of dozen Dreamcast Games as 'boxed' but I shouted the manager over and he changed them all to 'mint'. I've found that the level of competency differs from store to store (they are franchised by all accounts) so find one where the staff know what they are on about and stick with them. Me, I'm pleased I've shifted my games as I'll never set foot in one of their pissy smelling stores ever again. |

My experience with CeX is overwhelmingly positive. I bought a lot online from them when it was '10 items per £2.50 del', and instore have sold/bought many films, electronics etc.
Obviously its dependent store by store, but my experience in all the Glasgow stores has been positive, with friendly staff and have never had any disputes over grading tiers etc. But having said all that, I'll never agree with selling blu-rays, games etc. with printed covers at the same price as genuine covers. It's not like they don't have options in that regard, they have "budget ver." versions of many listings that cover ex-rentals, foreign releases (eg. I got a Nordic 'Pitch Perfect') etc. I can understand that in a store, cases/covers can be damaged, lost or stolen, and they still want to sell it. But it should be added to the cheaper "budget ver", and of course they need to follow their own policy to not send them out as online orders. |
