You can see big blocky compression artifacts easily at the beginning of the movie:

Even though above is a .jpg right now and not a .png, trust me the real thing DOES look like a highly compressed .jpg.

Wha? Does the blu-ray actually have moments looking that bad - that looks more like a VCD resolution (240p) blown up to 1080p

Agreed. That has to be an error.

It's unacceptable to see something like this on a blu-ray. It is bit-starved.

This scene is towards the end of a panning shot where everything on the screen is changing all the time, but with BD's capacity, even at BD-25, this can be avoided if handled properly. It looks like a lazy job with a quick compression.

Great review! This has convinced me to open my copy of the movie. While the transfer seems somewhat problematic, it sounds like it's still a visual feast to behold other than the issues.

Hmm....I ordered the special edition of Loving Vincent back in December from Amazon...their release date shows February 20, while the release date here shows January 30...I'm vexed..

Curious to see how international versions look. That macro-blocking is inexcusable.

It's really upsetting how this release was never sent in store to any of the major retailers. I hate buying online but I guess I don't have a choice.

I heard the Special Edition came out this week. Did they fix the compression, or is it the same transfer?

The digital copy on the special edition is a promo code for a HD or SD version on FandangoNOW.

This Amazon review sounds like it is the same transfer.

Oh hey, thats my review. There’s quite a lot of compression to be seen all throughout the Blu-Ray that is simply not seen in the 4K rental I viewed whenever that came out on FandangoNOW. I’ll provide pictures from the movie this weekend if you want.

Yup. I'm holding out for the 4K disc release for sure now.

I just finished watching this and found it to be surprisingly disappointing. The story, as other have said, isn't told particularly well, and the novelty of a painted film wears off rather quickly.

And I'm not knocking rotoscoping, but I'm kind of knocking rotoscoping. It's probably not fair, but I kind of see it as cheating a little bit. Yes, it's still amazing what the artists have done--painting in the style of van Gogh--but I don't think it's any more impressive than, say, the "Rhapsody in Blue" segment from Fantasia 2000, where Eric Goldberg's team adopted Hirschfeld's style. Still, it's a definite achievement, but not necessarily as exciting as I'd hoped.

This is now on Netflix, at least in Canada anyway.
I plan on watching it soon.

In the U.S., this is now streaming on Hulu, and also on HooplaDigital.com (free legit site through your local library) - in case anyone is interested and wants to see the movie.

What would be the best non-4K, Region A friendly alternative to the US Blu-ray?
