You can see big blocky compression artifacts easily at the beginning of the movie:
![]() Even though above is a .jpg right now and not a .png, trust me the real thing DOES look like a highly compressed .jpg. Last edited by hazelwu; 01-18-2018 at 06:38 AM. |

It's unacceptable to see something like this on a blu-ray. It is bit-starved.
This scene is towards the end of a panning shot where everything on the screen is changing all the time, but with BD's capacity, even at BD-25, this can be avoided if handled properly. It looks like a lazy job with a quick compression. |

Hmm....I ordered the special edition of Loving Vincent back in December from Amazon...their release date shows February 20, while the release date here shows January 30...I'm vexed..

The digital copy on the special edition is a promo code for a HD or SD version on FandangoNOW.

I just finished watching this and found it to be surprisingly disappointing. The story, as other have said, isn't told particularly well, and the novelty of a painted film wears off rather quickly.
And I'm not knocking rotoscoping, but I'm kind of knocking rotoscoping. It's probably not fair, but I kind of see it as cheating a little bit. Yes, it's still amazing what the artists have done--painting in the style of van Gogh--but I don't think it's any more impressive than, say, the "Rhapsody in Blue" segment from Fantasia 2000, where Eric Goldberg's team adopted Hirschfeld's style. Still, it's a definite achievement, but not necessarily as exciting as I'd hoped. |

What would be the best non-4K, Region A friendly alternative to the US Blu-ray?
