I can only imagine that your ISP will stand still at the sight of these mega downloads. ISP's sell peices of their bandwidth to many customers, you get a specific amount of the bandwidth they have available but they count on you not using it 24/7. Can you imagine the impact of hundreds or thousands of people hammering the ISP's lines for hours or days on end all at the same time? If this happens I they will have to purchase more bandwidth and I promise they'll raise our rates.

This is a great turn for BD. Keep in mind though Microsoft has billions of dollars in reserves and as many are are aware they have the ability to pump tons of money into it and take a loss for several years and then turn it into a profit and a standard. Also expect to see IPTV announcements and more partherships with cable companies going forward.
I agree with most of the folks here in that optical media is here to stay for a while. "a while" is the operative term. Anyone who believes that digital downloads won't eventually become norm is a complete tool. As infrastructure develops, this service will become more widely employed and I can almost gaurentee you that Microsoft will be involved. |

Yeah, just like with Xbox, except there are still no profits and nothing like an industry standard.

I want everyone to know I am a BluRay guy now. I am not going to be like some out there, and think it might last...I'm jumping ship with only 8 HDDVD's purchased so far. The horizon now is looking blu.

All I have to say is I was HDDVD all the way. Since the news yesterday, I'm getting off the ship before it sinks. Hello my BluRay family!

Digital download will not have any real future.
Right now we have ISP's that cap our downloads or lower our speeds if we download to much, so the thought of downloading a 50GB film over the internet is a pipe dream for us folks in the UK. I know speeds will get faster, but by then Holographic Versatile Disc (HVD) will be here which stores 3.9TB per disc. Check it out for yourselves HERE. |

With regards to Downloadable distribution....
All the arguements against it, point to (A) Storage, or (B) Download speeds. There's one point that I've realized that everyone tends to miss. Monthly data transfer caps. The fastest commercially available internet in my area (Calgary, Alberta) is Shaw Digital High Speed Nitro. This service costs about $100/mo. for internet alone; no cable TV, or Digital phone bundles. Maximum Download speed is 25 Mbps and Upload speed is 1 Mbps. Maximum monthly transfer is 150GB. If you go over that limit you have to pay additional money/penalties to the cable company. How many movies do you purchase every month? How quickly do you think you'd exceed that 150GB cap, if you include High Def movie purchases, music (mp3/Itunes), pictures, uploading crap to social network sites (myspace/facebook/etc). |
