It was included as a bonus short in the International Edition Blu-ray of 5 Centimeters per Second, albeit in SD.
The quality was better than either Anime Ltd.'s upscale or the standard DVD, albeit very slightly.

It is still treated as Makoto Shinkai's first feature film despite being a 30-minute short film so I do wish it gets at least a DVD-only release from GKIDS.

It makes more sense than packaging it as a double-feature with 5 Centimeters per Second like what Madman Entertainment did since at least a pairing between Voices of a Distant Star and The Place Promised in Our Early Days can make it easy to sort Shinkai's filmography in release order on the shelf.

I am still hoping FUNimation would eventually let their Your Name. licence expire, but that's unlikely.
It is still weird that NYAV Post (GKIDS' go-to dubbing studio) dubbed Your Name. despite being licensed by FUNimation. It was probably because the dub was commissioned by Anime Ltd. from the UK and the translation was written in British English but dubbed in American English.

Your Name. and Weathering With You were not just Japanese productions, but Japan-Hong Kong-United Kingdom co-productions.

The Garden of Words would expire any day now but I am not sure if Discotek would let 5 Centimeters per Second expire, especially since they got it very recently.

It’s already expired.

Should be noted, Crunchyroll is who had the license, not Discotek who was distributing on behalf of Crunchyroll, and CR was unable to renew the license.

That would explain why the most recently completed listings on eBay for used BDs of the film had a final selling price of $40 - $50. Well, at the very least there's still the English-subbed Hong Kong release in print for those who missed the boat.

I'm sure that they'll get relicensed for Blu-ray release again at some point. Wouldn't make much sense for CoMix Wave to keep them out of print for any significant amount of time, if you ask me.

As far as 5 Centimeters Per Second since Crunchyroll lost the license it would be up to some other company to get it again. Maybe Discotek might try to apply for it?

When didn't Sentai lose the license for Children?

So GKIDS did pick up licenses for pretty much every Shinkai film. Seems like Garden of Words remains with Sentai and Your Name with Funimation.

That's not inherently a bad thing, as both Funi's BD of Your Name and Sentai's remastered disc of Garden of Words are still in print and technically proficient.

According to Amazon and Best Buy, the release date has been changed to June 7, 2022.

The rear cover indicates that Voices of a Distant Star will not be included, nor any bonus features other than those directly connected to The Place Promised in Our Early Days (i.e. trailers and interviews), as they will be included on GKIDS' Blu-ray of 5 Centimeters Per Second instead.

Perhaps someone can confirm this is a legitimate pressing.

I received this in the mail today from someone on Ebay and I'm suspicious because the front cover design does not match the one that I see on-line (and on alltheanime.com), nor did it have the "film double pack" sticker on the shrink-wrap. On the other hand, it does have a reversible sleeve.

Easiest way to tell if a Blu-ray is a bootleg is to check if the bottom of the disc is black. Most bootlegs are BD-R with black bottom, not pressed with silver bottom.
