Tough deal for Paramount. Not very much good stuff lined up either.
Is there some connection between Darren Aronofsky and Laurence Fishburne I am unaware of?

Nope, it's Square-Enix (the publisher of the games) working with MGM/WB/GK.

I like Johnson quite a bit, but his taste in projects is questionable.

Selma was 2014. It may have released wide in 2015 but it doesn’t count, regardless.

Nah. The point - as proved by Disney buying Fox rather than any number of ailing studios e.g. MGM, Sony, Par - is that they want to obtain a successful business, not some rinky dink outfit that barely has a pot to piss in.

But Sony and Paramount have left over properties that Disney wants: distribution to the last 4 Indiana Jones films, full rights to the first 2 Iron Mans, the rest of Spider-Man, US distribution to Titanic, etc.

Can you really see Disney releasing a movie like Airplane! in 4K? A PG movie that for absolutely no reason at all has a full frame boob shot in the middle of the film? If they buy Paramount, it's just more films locked away in the mouse freezer.

Paramount just needs to scale back and re-evaluate their business strategy. Clearly, things are not going well. It might serve Paramount well to focus on properties that had a solid history or something worth taking a chance on. Adapting anime properties or tacking on sequels to franchises that frankly need a breather or a reset. Star Trek is 3 films into it's new universe, a new creative team and director would do well to correct the ship for another 2+ movies as the cast is not the issue. Friday the 13th, yes....the red headed step child. Here's a thought, stop re-inventing the friggin wheel we don't need Jason in the year 2017, keep it the 70's and 80's with the right crew it'd relaunch the franchise. The Jack Ryan universe... this is a tough one, but get Tom Clancy back on board. Take a low budget chance on some lesser known directors, plot concepts and different source material. It's time to hit the reset and bring in some new ideas. The industry needs competition, but the competition needs to try something new....

Disney isn't going to buy Paramount. The government would probably get involved with that one due to one company being too big in the movie business.

We are starting to see the slow implosion of the movie industry. Disney and FOX are merging. Paramount is in big trouble. Netflix makes movies that are never released in theaters. Should be fascinating to see where everything is in 5 years.

That stuff is small beer compared to what Disney really wants, the reason they bought Fox wasn't to tie up Star Wars or X-Men in a nice neat unified franchise bow but to exploit Fox's considerable reach into OTT delivery platforms and the same will apply to those other properties you've listed: they've got a few odds and ends that Disney would certainly like but nothing that they urgently need. Sony have already been desperate enough to share Spidey for the foreseeable future (keeping spin-offs for themselves, good luck with that) and a much bigger chunk of Titanic's bumper box office gross came from outside the US anyways. I don't know why people keep mentioning the US rights to that movie as if it's some kind of major priority for Disney. It's not, they're far more concerned with an ongoing Cameron franchise that they've just bought which will dovetail nicely with the money that they've already spent on the theme park for it.

As for Indy, Disney were happy enough to let Paramount retain the distribution rights to the four existing movies when they sorted out the rights to the future usage of the intellectual property itself, so clearly they're not that desperate for them and the same goes for the Iron Mans - although aren't they distributed by Disney now anyway? The Par logo still stays at the head of the film(s) with a kickback to them for 'allowing' Disney to distribute which seems fair enough to me, it's the foreign rights to IM that are more complicated but that's entirely Marvel's doing. There's nothing Paramount or Disney can do about that apart from buying out Concorde et al.

You work for Disney bruh?

Anyone else kind of uncomfortable with Disney owning EVERYTHING. Its not like mcu and the new star wars are truly great films or anything.

They'd never get away with it. Aside from the fact everyone over the age of 40 would complain that Scarlet and Rhett couldn't be cast properly, the film would be considered too racist. Look what happened at the annual screening this year.

Plus they'd want to CGI as much as possible to save money and that would look awful.

The Godfather wouldn't work either. Paramount just needs to be smarter.

Well, they did try to experiment with the theatrical and VOD thing with Paranormal Activity 4 and Scout's Guide. I don't think it went all that well since many of the theater chains didn't carry them. At least, they were actually trying for something.
To be fair, their 2018 slate does have a few original concepts in them.
Star Trek is getting an about face with Tarantino at the helm.
Jack Ryan is being rebooted at Amazon since Shadow Recruit didn't do all that well.
As for Friday the 13th, a new one was ready to shoot but got cold feet and pulled the plug. As I understand it, the rights are going back to the Victor Miller.
Keep in mind, this is a movie studio that essentially ran the 1970s and had its streak continue into the early 90s. They just have to get their groove back.

That deal basically mean that Disney would cover 60% of the film business, maybe more.
