Surprised nobody mentioned Netflix pulled out of Cannes allegedly amid a controversy of sorts.

Worth noting that what was announced today isn't set in stone, The Square was a late addition last year and they still have a month to go.

Birds of Passage looks a bit average considering how singular and unique Embrace of the Serpent was. The latter half of the trailer had some interesting aspects, but it kinda looked like a plain Cartel story overall.

Why do the critics boo films in Cannes, even the apparently good ones? Is it a cultural / tongue in cheek thing, or is it just because they're French?

It happens in Venice too, so I don't think it's a French thing. Sort of tradition to let know what you think of it when the movie is over. Some boo, some clap. But, partly, I think it's also the sort of people that are invited there, to be honest. I know several Belgian press- and/or movie-related persons who go there and I've been there myself more then 10 years ago and we all have the same idea about it. During the festival period, the people walking around there often are extremely snobbish.

True, but it does happen at Cannes even more than anywhere else, as I understand. I do think that, at least in part, it is a French thing.

Don't get me wrong: I love the French. I love their culture, their people, I love Paris. And really, in my experience, the French are very friendly and accepting people (for instance, in Paris it's almost impossible to find someone who doesn't speak English to one degree or another; in Quebec City, OTOH, there are all sorts of people who DO speak English, but just refuse to do so). So, this is not some anti-French tirade or anything. Heck, their films are my favorite films.

But, the fact of the matter is, the French do like to be a bit snobby sometimes. I, personally, have no problem with that. But it is true.

I have no idea why, but I just can't find any interest for this year's event. I usually follow all the YouTube streams and events closely. But this year I'm just so disengaged.

For me, Wang Bing's film is the biggest highlight by a huge margin.
