Rookie of the year is more worthy of a Criterion release then Bull Durham?!?!?! A movie about a 12 year old kid who breaks his shoulder and can suddenly throw 100 miles per hour and ends up playing for the Chicago Cubs.... Give me whatever you’re smoking.

Lol, based solely on the fact that it hasn’t gotten a blu-ray release yet. I don’t actually think it’s a better movie than Bull Durham, nor do I think Criterion should release it. But, FOX absolutely should! It’s a fun movie and I enjoyed it as a kid.

It's a no-brainer for Criterion to re-release these movies that are coming from new 4K scans/restorations. MGM seem to be doing it with most of their major films, and they're not planning to sell them directly (well through Fox) themselves, so why shouldn't a boutique label like Criterion pick it up?
They did it with Silence of the Lambs, Arrow did it with The Apartment, Shout with Carrie, and so forth. MGM are being raided right now for their films, and there's plenty more to go. The idea that these new restorations should take a backseat simply because a BD already exists is silly in my opinion. It's not an either/or thing. |

Yeah Gepetto doesn’t have a Blu-Ray either. Let’s get that in the collection too ASAP.

Day one for me even though I just picked it up last year. Change the sport to cricket and set it in rural India (bonus points for subtitles!) and there'd be no argument about it's inclusion in the collection. This is much more than a straightforward 'sports' movie.
And while I like the cover, it gets one key detail wrong: the squatchee (top button) on the cap should be royal blue, not orange. Probably something that 99% of the buying public won't notice or care about but it sticks out like a sore thumb to this cap collector. ![]() |

Nah. You've proven yourself unworthy of engagement on multiple occasions, including this one, as starting off a conversation with childish name-calling isn't exactly the most productive way to begin a meaningful conversation. Also, I'm not sure why you put "snob" behind spoiler tags. It comes across as cowardly. If you're going to insult someone, at least have the courage to do it plainly.

Mine was Rocky Horror Picture Show, saw that just before Bull Durham came out, and literally over 100 times since (was a cast member for several years in the early 90's)

i am just a joe schmo guy in a wheelchair with cerebral palsy and as you might imagine watching and enjoying a lot of movies was how i interacted with the world..i am 46 now and even though i have a ton of movies in my vernacular i am by far no where near a roger ebert or any movie critic...my brother is a walking person and movies is what we did together since i could not play football or soccer..and we still have movies in our life...i have a lot of criterion movies in my collection and i love them very much..but hopefully without getting a lot of people angry..but it seems to me that criterion groupies probably for the worse..tend to be the classic hoity toity movie snobs...i don't mean that in a bad way at all...everyone enjoys movies and gets pleasures from them for their own reasons and experiences and personal history that they bring with them when they watch a movie...for example my dad was a fighter pilot so i see military movies and aviation movies in maybe a different light....so im saying that we enjoy movies for various reasons and that is perfectly ok....and criterion has had a ton of movies for a long long time that maybe the wider movie audience would think is ancient and boring for whatever reason..i am thrilled tickled pink that criterion is starting to show more commercial movies in their collection and bull durham did get a lot of buzz when it first came out...at the end of the day the job of criterion is to sell movies and if going the commercial mainstreet route is the way to get more sales then i am gladly supporting that idea..and bull durhan was a fun romp that just entertained people...it never said it was not anything that it wasn't..and it never set out to change the world except make us feel good and laugh for 2 hours..i am planning on buying it when it comes out....my only real gripe about criterion is there is never a real sale or that their movies go down in price over time like most other blu rays do...and speaking of kevin costner i hope that one day criterion will release no way out and release the movie revenge in both the theaterical and directors cuts..i hope i didn't make anyone angry when they read this..that was not my intention at all

I don't mind Criterion releasing commercial movies at all as long as they're from 4K scans and replacing pre-existing blus with mediocre transfers. Such is the case with Bull Durham, The Breakfast Club, Tootsie, etc. And make no mistake, Bull Durham is one of the top five sports films ever made - probably the best picture about baseball. And as far as Costner goes, this could be the best performance he ever gave. I welcome this because none of his other late '80 movies have great-looking blu ray transfers at the moment (No Way Out, Untouchables, Field of Dreams, etc).

4 times a year are Criterion titles half-off, with Criterion's direct sale,a dn B&N's sale. Plus with the latter there's the possibility of getting them even lower with a membership discount and/or coupons (which are more YMMV these days). Plus, places like Deep Discount have titles for nearly 50% off, and with their 15% off coupons they do get to around that level, if not less.
