It's already crazy that we have two movies with F CinemaScore ratings this month. But what if Gretel and Hansel gets one next weekend too? It does seem potentially artsy. But it would have to have a bad ending to really piss people off.

I mean does that count? The Devil Inside was in ten theaters when Silent House opened.

Technically still playing!

I get what you mean though. Might be the first time two have been in nationwide release together?

EDIT: Dr. T, Lucky Numbers, AND Lost Souls were out in nationwide (1,000+) release at the same time as each other back in Oct 2000, so I guess not.

I didn't remember Lucky Numbers and Lost Souls getting F's. But remembered Dr. T getting one. With that ending how could it not? 3 F movies out at once is very impressive.

You wonder how they let films like this even get released. Is there no QA team to say "Hey guys.... this movie sucks" or something like that? Just because the dude from It and Stranger Things is in it doesnt make it good. Yikes though - its getting trashed everywhere and by everyone.

That’s kind of what January is for. Dumping films they know aren’t good and trying to recoup something out of it. This was apparently filmed and pushed back from a release a year ago, so they definitely knew

Not sure if anyone else was annoyed by this, but They make a point of setting it in the year
[Show spoiler]1994 and open the movie with her seeing the news that Kurt Cobain has committed suicide, using it as a foreshadowing I guess (his picture is also in Miles’ room) that mental illness is going to play a part in the film
and after the filmed ended and I realized they did this it kind of pissed me off

You've got this upside down. These horror films succeeded despite being dumped in January not because of it. Releasing Doctor Sleep at a less advantageous date, would not have made it more successful.

Agree to disagree. I guess you think that it would still bomb, regardless of dates.

It may have bombed even worse. I liked Doctor Sleep well enough but I can see why, unlike the remakes of The Pet Sematary and It, it was less likely to connect with a wider audience.

I agree. Love Doctor Sleep (mainly the director's cut), but I also can see why it bombed.

I know it wasn’t a huge hit and did not meet expectations opening weekend, but is a movie a bomb if it makes more than it’s budget? To me a bomb is a movie that loses a significant amount of money. Doctor Sleep took in $70+ million on a $45-55 million budget and will probably do much better on home video rentals/sales

I get that there are additional marketing distribution costs, but I’m just going in the budget/gross info available

Worldwide promotional costs for a film like this are as much as the budget. It's been estimated that Doctor Sleep will lose the studio 20 million. Any movie which loses money is a bomb, any movie which breaks even is considered a disappointment.

I dont agree that just losing money is the definition of a bomb—but it’s obviously subjective. When I hear bomb I think it has to not just fail but fail badly (not earned its budget back). 20 million to me isn’t failing badly. It earned a profit over its budget but didn’t recoup marketing—but I’m sure it easily will on home video platforms

Ironically The Turning won’t be a bomb only because they did no marketing and it only cost 10ish million to make

Doctor sleep is a definite bomb. Could’ve even make more than Dreamcatcher and Stephen King movies are popular these days.

No,it’s not “obviously subjective”, not to those who work in film production anyway. You appear to have no grasp on what “profit” means or why Hollywood makes films in the first place. It’s called the film industry, not the film charity.

I’m an English teacher, which doesn’t make me an expert, but I do understand the difference between subjectivity and objectivity. There is no literal definition of what circumstances qualifies something as “a box office bomb”. The definition of bomb is literally “to fail badly” and does not include “lose money”.

Also, why are you being hostile?

I just looked at the original post and was stunned to find that Joely Richardson is in this. It feels like Universal put the trailer for this film in front of every film I saw last fall, but I could have sworn I never saw her in it. How bizarre that she is in a film with such a small cast, yet the studio cannot find room for her in the trailer. I mean, I wouldn't expect it to make much difference, but Joely is at least a recognizable face.

Rebecca Ferguson was the villian in MIB International but wasn't in any of the trailers or ads.

I think it’s because of her role. maybe they thought it was too revealing? Not sure honestly. I didn’t know she was in it until the opening credits
