Hmmm, rather uneven is this. When the image is left alone and not thwacked with the DNR stick it looks really good, crisply detailed and plenty filmic with a fine layer of grain, but when the DNR is ladled on it sucks the texture out of the image and puts glaring edge halos around contrasting edges. As with, say, Batman Begins, it can flip-flop from shot to shot in a single scene which is what makes it so maddening. That said, because this was originally mastered from camera negative (as with 99% of DI's) there's enough detail in the DNR'ed scenes to make it bearable, unlike the extraordinarily plastic-faced look of BB which started with an interpositive to begin with; those sources just don't have enough inherent high frequency detail to be able to withstand being blasted with DNR.
HDR is really nice, it may still seem like it's blowing out highlights at first glance but if you were to then compare it with the Blu you'd see just how much more highlight information is being clipped out in the SDR presentation. Punchy amount of brightness to said highs as well, nothing to make you shield your eyes but very pleasantly done. The gamma is lower on the UHD, blacks don't seem so dense and so yield more shadow information than the Blu-ray, a few shots look a bit grey in the blacks but others still hit deep when needed. Colour is interesting, the SDR disc has the customary yellow cast to it while the HDR is more neutral although that only extends so far, as certain scenes (often those that are lit with fluorescents) have a more overtly bluey tint on the UHD than they do on the BD. Couple of quick photos, usual caveats apply about not being 100% accurate representations of either image, just compare what I'm telling you to compare and we'll get along fine. Highlight detail, look at the rocks or the top of the red cooler next to Tarconi or the white parts of the boat [Show spoiler] Quick one for colour, the UHD has more of a cooler look and you can again see the difference in the highlights on his face [Show spoiler]

Enjoyed the PQ on this. Wonderfully filmic and great black levels. I liked that the movie was more grounded. I was expecting Statham's character to have to save the world or something. His scenes with the French police officer were nice. The over-the-top action was a lot of fun. I loved the underwater scene. Had a blast with the music too.
It was kind of funny that the special features were basically in SD. Haven't seen that on a UHD before. |
