Then don't buy it since you never reach for it?

Maniac is a great film that paved the way for films like Henry (and Joe Spinell's performance remains unchallenged in that regard.)

Who said "never", besides you? I watch MANIAC every two or three years.

In what regard? Are you saying that Spinell gives the greatest portrayal of a murderer in cinema history?

He does give one of the greatest performances ever, yes.

I would agree with that, but you said his performance was "unchallenged", which is a pretty far cry from your new claim that he gave "one of the greatest performances ever".

I've been a big Spinell fan for many years and consider his work on MANIAC to be highly impressive, but I'd never cite that performance as the best of its kind, which is to say a portrayal of a deranged killer. It's very good, but the best? I mean...

Yeah the poor PQ was what kept me away. I'm sure this new Blu-ray will be a revelation. Sucks to have to wait potentially two years but as usual I've got plenty on my plate to watch.

Two years? Did Lustig say that was the timeframe? I saw him in Philly when he made the announcement about Maniac and if I recall, the new edition will be coming much sooner. He said the 4K scan was already done.

I don't care how much it is, if there's some cool DiabolikDVD exclusive version, i'm pre-ordering the shit out of it.

I've been wanting to revisit this super influential movie again for a long time and I really don't mind waiting a while to see it the way it was meant to be seen.

...I wonder if they're going to fix that one weirdly edited bit with Joe and Caroline once and for all, though.

Last but not least, is it too much to hope for the soundtrack CD to be included too? Preferably with the Don Armando's Second Avenue Rhumba Band songs added on as bonus tracks.

He just told me that the release is slated later this year and there will be 4K theatrical screenings. The OCN was in pristine condition too. “A revelation.”

I didn’t get around to asking about UHD but who knows

Edit: They are “figuring out the numbers” regarding UHD.

I don't remember where I read it (another thread on this board, facebook, twitter) but I made myself a note that it was slated for October this year. It must have been posted somewhere.

Yes please! It's such a lovely score (the main theme is phenomenal).

Also, got a reply from BU:
Hello. The new 4K restoration of MANIAC is underway now. We don't have any information yet on when it will be released or what will be included on the release. We'll post updates on our FB page as we get them.

It will be good to have a pristine copy of this film.

I hope this version will be complete. I still have my bootleg copy of the LD release, where the scene with Frank and Anna, in the restaurant, was edited out (at the director's request) and moved to the supplements as a deleted scene. Previous DVD/Blu-ray releases have re-instated the scene.

Does anyone really expect movies of this kind to be released on UHD anytime soon? Especially from a boutique label?

Glad to know the Blu-ray is coming soon at least.

No. UHDs exist as a showcase for big, glossy Hollywood productions. But the format is still in its infancy and in my experience they haven't mastered it quite right yet. I own close to 70 UHD titles and I can say with all honesty I'm only truly satisfied with about 1/3 of them. Maybe the small indy labels will produce better work but that's still somewhat far off.

Great artwork, though I bet the classic poster image will be for the amaray...and maybe Spinell's preferred poster image will be the reverse amaray art.

I hate new art, so I hope the classic poster is on the reverse.

Same here. The classic artwork should be on the reverse.

You say that like THE DEVIL'S REJECTS is an important movie, or like Zombie is an important filmmaker.
