YrAs far as I can tell, it's not like Cundey has actively pursued variant grading/correction schemes. Prior to the 35th Anniversary he only gave his approval to the efforts people had made for their idea of how best to present the movie on DVD, when it was still mainly being watched on CRTs.
That included some conspicuous tricks that were used to "enhance" aspects of the movie (applied quite inconsistently, if you pay attention to that version) by whoever put the THX version together. Which delighted and revitalised a lot of home video fans when it came out ... twenty years ago. The last transfer was "supervised" by both Carpenter and then Cundey. This time, it appears that relatively little "enhancement" was necessary to yield the results that the film-makers recall was their original intent and which may or may not have been accomplished in 1978. My opinion is that in the key areas, the Cundey "supervised" version achieves what the film-makers have always talked about in regards to the film's look. The apricot skin tones and two inches of foundation in the girls faces and the even greener lawns on the THX version are the side effect of the attempts to unduly enhance some of those aspects and retrofit new ones (e.g. the autumn-isation of some, not all, of the trees... in some, not all, of the shots they appear). I don't get the impression that Cundey gratuitously flips on what he wants or wanted Halloween to look like. Last edited by Martoto; 07-16-2018 at 04:56 PM. |

I saw him last time around in Bristol. He came out and signed for people afterwards too. Not saying that will happen again but it's worth waiting around by the tour bus if you can.

I saw him in Manchester the last time. Didn't bother trying to meet him though. Not really my thing.

Has any previous edition had Mark Kermode's sit down chat with Carpenter about the film? The Scream!/Anchor bay edition never had it, which is a shame as its a great chat.

Was that for Simple Things? The one year I missed it, and was only really interested in seeing him...ah well. Might try go to his upcoming London date, if I can find someone to go with.

I'd love to just have one documentary which doesn't restrict itself to the genre stuff and explores how it inspired various film-makers in other ways. |

But, cheaper than £15, and stuff. Lionsgate have been knocking out cheapy catalogue UHDs from the start and I don't expect this to be any different, the B&N price of $19 is a good enough indicator of dat cheapyness!

I'm not. Sex on its own, BBFC okay, violence on its own, BBFC okay, but when the two cross over then they still take a harder line on such matters and you're still very likely to end up with that throbbing red 18 plastered all over it. Halloween isn't the most sexualised slasher ever made, it's all rather tame by modern standards, but there's stuff like Michael's topless sister being hacked up at the beginning, topless PJ getting strangled by Michael, and that the murdered characters are mostly of school age doesn't help matters.
For a more recent example you only have to look at Red Sparrow, which was released as a cut UK 15 by Fox but an uncut 18 was made available to them. The heck of it is, even without having seen the censorship report below (which has only been up for 5 days) I knew EXACTLY what scene it was that the BBFC didn't like at a 15 when I watched the uncut US UHD a few weeks ago. I didn't post this anywhere so it may seem like it's me being Nostradamus after the fact, but the scene where [Show spoiler] might as well have had a honking great sign on it saying "Dis is wut wuz cut out!", and so it proved: https://www.movie-censorship.com/report.php?ID=25667
