The entire reason they even SET it in Spain was so that it was foreign and spooky. You're not supposed to understand the Spanish. And if you really want to get technical, its Galician, which is typically used less often and therefore even more "foreign." It's why even Barbara has a difficult time communicating. She speaks Spanish, and they technically do not.

The Shadow Over Innsmouth wouldn't really make sense as a modern-day piece set in the USA. As with every Paoli/Gordon adaptation of Lovecraft, they only took the most basic elements from the story and expanded upon it significantly.

Right that’s exactly what I’m saying...? It wouldn’t work in the USA so to make it scarier it’s set in Spain (which is likely also a budgetary thing) and you’re not supposed to understand what they’re saying, hence none of the versions subtitling the translated foreign languages...

Well, that and it was a whole lot easier to get the locals to speak their own language than some form of broken English. The main reason for shooting Dagon and Beyond Re-Animator in Spain was that it could be done a lot cheaper than shooting in the US. Of all the Brian Yuzna produced films that were shot in Europe, I'm pretty sure it's the only one that isn't set in the US (and the only one that uses locations instead of being done entirely on a set).

I hope you don't think that the American release looks any better.

They both look equally bad, which really is overblown anyway. There’s DNR but it’s nowhere near as bad as something like Predator UHE or even the Star Trek movie set. This was an early aughts DTV movie, so I don’t know why people are expecting some kind of revelation. It’s a lateral move and the features are much better on the Vestron.

It's a swings and roundabouts situation. US might have better extras but Australian has an outstanding secondary audio track (if you manually select it).

Who's bright idea was that anyway? Yeah let's make the default one sound like bollocks and hide the good one with absolutely no indication that it's even there, totally logical

Even Pro-B's review states there's just the one audio track (which he bafflingly says is great...)

Umbrella has done this a few times, including multiple audio tracks without any corresponding menu to access them. I always give the "Audio" button on my remote a push when viewing their discs, just to see if there's extra options there.

Hello, does someone know if the first (German) blu-ray release of Dagon is 1080i or 1080p please ? Because on Blu-ray.com, dvdcompare.net, Schnittberichte.com and at the rear of the blu-ray box it is said it's 1080p, but at ssl.ofdb.de, it is said it's 1080i : https://ssl.ofdb.de/view.php?page=fa...275&vid=409853

Default French release uncut?

Hi, does anyone know if the French release from ESC Editions (June 16, 2021) is uncut and how does the picture quality stack up to the Vestron and Umbrella releases? This is a favourite low budget horror film of mine so would love to get a hand on the best possible transfer. Thanks...!!

I haven't found any info yet, I'd assume it'll be uncut although the cover being nearly identical to the US disc doesn't bode too well for it being a different transfer. On the other hand, Arrow UK released a superior edition of Beyond Re-Animator a few months ago, so it may be worth holding out to see if they follow suit with this one.

Yeah I know, I got the Arrow UK of Beyond Re-Animator too. It's superior!

Do you mean that Arrow UK will release Dagon too? I couldn't find any info on that? Thanks.

That was just me hoping out loud haha, but it's definitely the type of thing I can see them doing. Hopefully it's just a matter of time and no rights issues are involved.

Well then I'll join you in that hope and prayer for Arrow to release it, with their quality control, superb encodes and supplements!

Perhaps we should pray to Dagon for it to be released by Arrow?
