The replaced BDs in my collection are starting to stack up, not sure what I'm going to do with most of them. Pretty much no one else in my family collects home media and nobody seems to want to buy them. Oh well.

Just go to a pawn shop and unload the lot of them. Even if you only get a buck apiece...hey, that's enough to pay for your lunch.

I'll try, some of them are missing stuff. Definitely been considering that lately. At least at a pawn shop I don't have to worry about buyers and I don't have to deal with shipping stuff out. Maybe I can find a few films I don't have yet, too. The Harry Potter UK set I will probably just give to my niece and nephew since the DVDs were already given to them and I don't feel like getting the DVDs again just to sell it.

cassettes are no longer made, yet collectors seek out things like that for the nostalgia factor. and they pay tons of money for them.
I'm not discounting this, but I don't understand this obsession with dead tech/media. Cassettes were a crap format when they were out, and they're even worse now. The sound wasn't that great; you had to turn them over mid-way through; and there was always the chance that these would get "eaten" by the Cassette deck. So, I'm baffled as to why someone would pay upwards of $1,000 (or even $100) for these players - wow

There's nothing exceptional about this format whatsoever, and it had a lot of issues (as I mentioned). I wouldn't take any cassettes - or a cassette deck - if you gave it to me for free. The same goes for VHS tapes, LD's, etc.

I can kind of see the attraction to & resurgence/popularity of Vinyl records - though I don't like the sound quality & inconvenience of the format, the artwork on the covers, etc. was interesting - and collectible.

like i said, it's the nostalgia factor. it has nothing to do with sound/picture quality...it's the nostalgia and memories they bring back; often from one's childhood.

there are quite a few collectors on youtube who have insane game collections. some go back to the atari 2600...or ever the odyssey. and they have every permutation of it (collector's edition, japanese editions, different colors, etc.) and i'd be willing to bet their collections run in the tens of thousands of dollars. it's what they like to do. and if they have the money, i have no problem with that.

there's also quite a few who have collect old computers (apple, apple 2, commodore 64, old ibm machines, etc.). and some of those can go for quite high depending on the condition.

and by today's standard, the systems and games are basically crap in comparison. but to be able to hold something in your hand and have that tangible connection to your childhood....well that's something a lot of people long for.

and going back to the quality aspect, collectors care less about the quality of the software (8-bit, 16-bit, dvd, hd, 4k), only the physical quality of the machines and the cartridges/tapes/discs.

BUT....there's nothing wrong with either liking it or not liking it. it's all personal preference.

To each their own. If someone wants to spend good $ on old, crummy, outdated tech - that's their business.

However, note that not everyone who grew up with this old garbage is nostalgic for any of this. I grew up with VHS tapes, cassette decks, etc. & I hated these formats when they were the only ones available.

I never got into Laserdisc's due to the expense & inconvenience of the format - and I'm glad I didn't.

I haven't had a VCR or any VHS's since 1996, when my machine broke & I never replaced this. I haven't had a cassette deck for years, either. Good riddance to all this crap.

It should be obvious to everyone on here, but just in case: VHS tapes & LD's, in addition to being crummy formats from a technical standpoint - also only featured films in either pan & scan or non-Anamorphic WS picture. So, you were never getting the full picture re: a film when watching these formats.

Sure, I still watch pan & scan DVD's these days when I don't have any other choice (i.e., if the film hasn't been released in a better format), but it definitely takes a lot away from the viewing experience.

Try Decluttr. You can scan the UPCs and sell them. You’ll get peanuts AT BEST (they give cents for most discs), and you have to sell at least ten at a time, but they ship them to their warehouse for free. Unless it’s a rare disc or something, I’ve just come to accept that I’m not going to get much money for them. They take CDs and some video games too.
