I remembered someone coming back from the screening of GOTHICMADE said Mamoru Nagano not willing to convert this 2160p animated film into 1080p so no plans for BD releases, and there were no UHD back then. But I just can't find much information about the production of this film to verify.

Hi guys. A very interesting discussion. I'm assuming there's still been no progress or rumors on a 4K release of either Akira or better yet, Macross Plus?

Is there a source for the Castle of Cagliostro US release? Back in December I contacted rightstuf to ask, when they will list it, but they told me they don't know anything about this release.

I'm guessing it has no English subs or English dub? How is the 4K compare to the Full HD version?

I have never seen Akira before, and I was thinking of buying the BD that I saw at Best Buy.

if no audio commentary for akira 4k then its a wasted opportunity. same with any upcoming oshii titles, get him to do one for patlabor 2!! if they cant get the director, then animation director would be the next best thing

Makoto Shinkai's latest, Weathering With You, is getting an English-friendly 4K UHD release in Japan on May 27th: https://www.cdjapan.co.jp/product/TBR-30000D

Likely another upscale, so wonder if it is worth dropping 12,000 yen ($111 currently) on the Collector's Edition, or just getting the standard BD at 4800 yen ($45 right now): https://www.cdjapan.co.jp/product/TBR-30001D.

I COULD wait for GKIDS' US Blu-ray, but that probably won't hit until end of year and I am sure, while it will look fine, will have a lower bitrate than the Japanese import...

As mentioned before: As all other western distributors scheduled their releases if Weathering With You for September, it most likely will be the same for GKIDS.

Have anyone here imported the UHDBD versions of Gundam CCA and F91? If they are worth the upgrades I would like to buy them before they are out of print.

They suffer from more DNR than the 0079 Trilogy does, which are easily the best UHDs Sunrise has put out, but I still think they are an improvement in general over the old BDs. The included BDs also were reworked and don't have the windowboxing issues the old ones did, though I believe they were created from the same DNR'd master. Both movies were 35mm sources though so the grain was already pretty fine as it is, so I don't think the DNR hurt it all too terribly.

Shame no English subs from what I can see by looking at the Google translated version of the product page.

Look for the kanji "英語" when you want to see if something has English support or not.

35mm color is closest to DCI/P3 color limitations. Not far from HD’s rec.709.
