Didnt notice anything with absurd.

The phase error in anthropophagous can be fixed by forcing stereo or mono on your sound system. If you keep sound system it in surround mode you are going to experience issues from 45min mark all the way through the end of the movie.

I see. Thanks for the tip.

Can anyone confirm if this audio issue with Anthropophagous is just on the Severin films copy or if the 88Films copy has it as well? If it's limited to Severin, then it sounds like their mess-up and not a problem with source material (but I could be wrong). Has anyone forwarded the issue to Severin to see what they say?

My 88 Films (re-issued) disc is fine and has no problems.

I just emailed them about the issue myself. I'll provide an update as soon as I hear back.

Haha... I totally know what you mean. I've honestly thought about picking this up as I've never seen Anthropophagous but I'm not sure that I can!?

I'm a total horror hound and not easily offended by horror films but this just seems like one that I don't think I can watch....and if I did watch it I have a feeling that it may be one that I wouldn't want to put on my shelf.

Maybe one day I'll get the nerve to pick it up.... or not.

A problem like this in the source can always be avoided by encoding as mono or downmixing to mono first before encoding as stereo.

I thought the English track on the disc was a mono track, no?

Its mono encoded as DTS 2.0 Stereo. Normally this would result in the surround decoder collapsing the sound to the center channel as it should.

The problem is that instead of being in-phase throughout the entire film as it should be, at 44:25 it goes out of phase and this will make surround decoders think the soundtrack has surround channel information. So in order to avoid this you need to force Mono or Stereo mode on your receiver instead of leaving in surround mode as you normally would.

This can be avoided on Severin's end by encoding in 1.0 mono or downmixing a 2ch mono master to 1ch before encoding in 2.0.

The only thing you need to be scared about regarding Anthropophagous is falling asleep. I appreciate the film enough as I like D'Amato, and I own it, but it's really a slog for the majority of its running time. At least there's a little gore at the end, most of that cut from the US "The Grim Reaper" version, but even the gore is nothing that extreme really.

"Absurd" is a much better film, more fun and features a miniature schnauzer named Blitz.

I found both films a little disappointing but still enjoyable largely thanks to the atmosphere (Anthropophagous in particular is just dripping with it), music, effects and the fact that George Eastman, whom I'd never heard of before, is a freakin' beast in both films.

As for the gore, I was rather surprised at how tame both films were in that regard. I guess it just shows how much things have changed over the years. What was deemed shocking and distasteful in the late-70s/early-80s is often pretty tame nowadays. I've probably seen more shocking gore in a typical episode of Criminal Minds. Although granted, the
[Show spoiler]fetus munching
in Anthropophagous was still pretty . . . gross and disturbing.

Gotcha! Thanks for the explanation- I’m always a bit confused as to the difference between 1.0 and 2.0 mono. Hopefully Severin address this.

I just went to order the Anthropophagous/Absurd Blu-ray bundle with the limited "Video Nasty" slipcovers from Severin's website, but I can't seem to find the listing. Could they possibly have sold out of the slipcovers?
