That's just so terrible

I do remember being bothered by the horrible video quality 12-13 years ago, when I got the box set, now that I think about it.

Reading all the positive things about this series on here has me seriously thinking about blind buying it.

I don't think Kimagure Orange Road needs a dub. The characters are so linked with their seiyuu at this point, and the way they address each other in Japanese ("Kasuga-kun," "Ayukawa," etc.) is an important part of the series. I also don't have much confidence in English dub voice actors being able to properly pronounce the names. And as has been said, dub fans aren't likely to be interested in this older show and the old school fans who have been waiting for it aren't likely to care about a dub.

Now, Giant Robo -- I would be down for a new dub for that if they can make it good (third time's the charm?). I'm not as offended by the idea of watching a show like Giant Robo in English.

The picture quality on the old AnimEigo DVDs is pretty bad by today's standards. I was tempted so many times over the years to order the 2008 R2 box set from Japan. But it's still not as bad as the first copy I had, Arctic Animation's fansub on nth generation VHS, complete with subtitles that would stay on screen for five minutes after the dialogue ended and profanity-filled rants over the ending credits. Those were dark times, dark times indeed.

Probably my favorite anime of all time. Really special series, with a series capping movie that basically goes to 11... I had the fansubs, then the Animeigo LDs, then Netflix, and now finally BD. So glad Animeigo "let go" of this one: given their kickstarter era production schedule I had a feeling it was never going to see the light of day.

To anyone thinking of blind buying, I can only say this: I have a half-dozen friends who don't watch anime, but having experienced this twenty years ago are going to make it their first anime BD purchase. The show, OVA, movie(s) are deliriously entertaining, not just "as anime" but as cultural touchstones. Anime fans in the post-EVA generation have been, in my experience, not too selective about their consumption, but KOR is equivalent to "The Wire" or "Breaking Bad" level quality. Heck, before the golden age of American dramas, this was what the quality-conscious subsisted on! Chungking Express is a film that feels artistically similar: a heart-shredding nostalgia trip across a crystallized slice of time from a world you never knew, with a soundtrack that takes it to another level (the music has a lot of lifts - some blatant like the Simon and Garfunkel instrumentals, and Fly Me to the Moon-lite, but I find the Cat Stevens influence profound, like the composer had Foreigner Suite on his turntable to assist cranking out his beautiful piano variations). The closest I get in real life is Japanese AM radio with Showa era tunes on sunny weekend drives on the ocean coast. They really don't make them like this anymore.

Yeah, the first time I saw the movie, I didn't know what to expect and anticipated it to have the tone of the series. It really hit me hard and I cried like a baby during the end credits. Such a powerful film that is true to life.

My only reservations would be how they handle the "subtitle modifications" or whatever. Like Zen_Amako said, I want read/hear "Ayukawa" and "Kasuga-kun", not "Madoka" and "Kyosuke" (until it actually happens).

I know someone who does freelancing subtitles at Discotek, so I'll see if they know.

To be fair, Justin did just say they needed "minor" revision. I would call going into every episode and changing the way the characters address each other a major revision myself. It probably wouldn't hurt to tweet Schmullus to see if he's allowed to provide any details, though.

As far as I recall since I’ve got GE999 on the brain right now, everything should match up to what you hear. I usually prefer it that way, as well as retaining JP name order since that matches what is heard, so it should all be in sync.

The first movie is one of the great anime films of the 1980s. You're never gonna get an anime movie like that today, that's for sure.

Not soon enough.

EDIT: Just in case you are not just showing your enthusiasm and didn't see the initial post, they only said it is in very early production. Hopefully, everything will go smoothly for Discotek and the licensor's approvals will be quick.

Finally, a small update on Kimagure Orange Road! @worldofcrap and @ashuraou have been hard at work on this set. The TV series is close to authoring, the packaging is almost done, and one awesome goodie we're including is a production art gallery!
Justin Sevakis:

TV series is wrapping up authoring, hoping to send off to QC very soon. Will include the never-before-translated music video OVA, "Their Love Repertoire" (still in SD due to cheesy 80s video effects)!
Brady Hartel:

A.) I loved making this logo. B.) The character art in this gallery was scanned from the original pencil sketches, and not just photocopies like a lot of settei tend to be. So they're probably the cleanest the art is ever going to look.

It took us a BUNCH of digging, but we managed to find a lot of good extras for Orange Road. Toward the 11th hour we were kind of bummed that we didn't have much of anything on this release, but some sleuthing paid off and we filled it out with some very cool stuff.
Brady Hartel:

The full TV Series will be one set, the first movie only and the OVAs will be the second set.

Looking like early 2019 at this point.

That's another reason why I love Discotek. Most other companies would've just shrugged their shoulders and said, "Oh well. We weren't provided any extras so there will be no special features." I can't wait to see everything they dug up for this release.

I like that they are keeping the whole series together as one set instead of forcing you to buy both if you just want the series. I'll probably buy both eventually but the series is definitely the priority.

If they're getting that pumped about settei, I'm not going to get my hopes up for "a lot of good extras". Still sucks we don't get Summer's Beginning.
