I assume that if you order from BFI's online shop, then surely you would get the corrected version. When they press the new discs, that is. There must be a comment field when you place the order to tell them to include the corrected disc and not the faulty one.

Got the disc. Did a quick check and it certainly has a different transfer. The scene 30 minutes in of Belle walking into the castle, the macroblocking issue is completely gone. Proper greyscale.

So what is the procedure for requesting a replacement disc? Is there a specific email address for this?

From the Bfi Facebook page:

Corrected discs of our release of La Belle et la bête are now available to customers.

If you purchased a copy from the BFI Shop please send an email to bfishop@bfi.org.uk with La Belle et la bête in the subject line, providing your name and address. If you purchased a copy from any other retailer, please send an email to video.films@bfi.org.uk again providing the necessary information. If you have proof of purchase that you can include in your email then please do so, however don’t worry if you don’t, we trust you!

We will be re-working our stock in warehouse so if you purchase a copy in the future and are unsure if it’s the corrected version, please refer to the disc on-body. A V2 has been added to the end of the small print that goes around the edge of the disc.

Thank you to all our customers who have been so patient whilst we addressed this issue.

Sent an email on Monday requesting a replacement copy and received it today (packaged in space age Buck Rogers silver envelope just like the ones Eureka used for their Police Story replacements).

You likely won't hear back but they'll just send it. I emailed them on Friday and mind arrived on Tuesday, so you'll likely get a quick turnaround.

I did ask a couple of questions whilst I was there - good news is that Orphée Blu-ray is planned for a January release, bad news is that BFI aren't releasing 9 to 5 (but another label might get it at some point; probably Criterion or MoC).

Thanks for the info update.

Sent an email with proof of purchase. Will wait on the replacement hopefully coming soon.

Edit : Just got a reply from Ben at the BFI to tell me my replacement will be sent out tomorrow. I wasn't expecting a reply, but that's top notch of him and the BFI.

Here's dvdcompare's re-written PQ review:

"All the macroblocking issues on the initial disc have been corrected on the new disc. Scenes such as Belle first entering the castle, the darker scenes in town which were plagued with blacks looking muddy and compressed are no longer an issue, with blacks and greys looking natural again with no digital artifacts or encoding errors. Other than that the film looks as it should, with the positives of the initial disc being left intact and the errors completely fixed.

It's wonderful that the BFI has decided to correct their mistake and repress the disc with a corrected image."

Have to get this at some point: I have the Criterion re-release dvd.

Just received a copy form Amazon. It was shrink wrapped (rather than standard cellophane sealed) with a typical bubbly cover.

Just wondering if copies went back to the BFI to be resealed with the new pressing of he disc.

Guess I need to open it and check the disc.

My copy from Amz had the original shrink wrap with dual format grey sticker on it but the disc was a first pressing one . BFI sent me the replacement disc when I contacted them.

Cheers. Think it's a re-seal. Guess I'll open and see if the booklet is OK (and what the disc is like etc).

The version I've got looks to be Blu-Ray only (no DVD).
