For some reason this movie popped into my head this morning, so i started looking to see if it was available on any streaming services as i knew it wasn't out on Blu. Couldnt find it on streaming, so i figured i'd see if there was a wish list post about it. VERY happy to see it's coming out in a week or so! Saw this in the theater when it came out and have owned it on DVD before, but the disc became unreadable after i lent it to a friend years ago and they didnt take care of it. Looking forward to picking this up!

I'm caught between a rock and a hard place with these back catalog titles. On one hand, I think it's great that studios are still digging these out and releasing them on Blu-ray even if it's sporadically. OTOH, I can't help but imagine how much more exciting these would be if they were full-fledged Collector's Editions. Toy Soldiers is one of the better early 90's action films and there's gotta be some making-of material somewhere that they could've included. Same goes for The Principal. It's just a missed opportunity.

Could somebody at the staff of Blu-ray.com take 2 minutes out of their day and explain to Martin Liebman how 2.0 Stereo really works? His (and others) reviews are becoming embarrassing when he talks about 2.0 tracks having a lack of center channel and surrounds. They're baked in, Martin, you just have to unlock them with Dolby Pro Logic.
Pro Logic, Martin. 2.0 stereo tracks are designed to ONLY be played back in Pro Logic (II). It's how Dolby Stereo actually works. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dolby_Stereo |

No, the reviewer was right. What you are talking about is Dolby Surround Stereo, where there is indeed a third (surround) channel encoded into the mix, which is designed to be decoded with something like Dolby Pro Logic to play back the 1 surround channel through the surround speakers. It is NOT the exact same thing as Dolby Stereo. Dolby Surround Stereo used to be on some tv show dvds and movies, but I don't think I've ever seen it used on a lossless BD before. The sound mix on the Toy Soldiers BD isn't even Dolby - it's DTS. If you are listening to any native Stereo 2.0 track using anything other than the 2 main stereo speakers, then you are listening to it using matrixed processing that is not the way it was intended to be heard. It will likely not sound as natural as a track that has encoded dedicated surround channels. For accuracy's sake, the reviewer should test and review the sound mix as it exists on the disc (which is what it sounds like he did), not as it sounds using his receiver's matrixed processing. So, if he said there isn't a dedicated center or surround channels in the mix, and the mix is 2.0, then he is right. It also means there is not a dedicated lfe channel either. So the mix will likely be somewhat lacking in bass as well, especially if your main speakers can't reach down very low. |

I was going to buy this until I saw the price. As cool as it would be to have this in HD in its OAR, I'm not paying $22.99 for it. This is a catalog title and should not be more than $15. $10 would be ideal, but $15 is fair. Anything more and I feel like I'm being violated. I could see if this was a Shout release or a Twilight Time release, but this is a Sony release. Sorry, but this is not worth $22.99. But enjoy your Blu-ray.

Dolby Stereo was always a matrixing technology. And it will continue to be to this day on home media if you want to hear how the mix played theatrically. Also, weather it's presented on disc in a Dolby or DTS 2.0 configuration is irrelevant. That's just a delivery system for the original Dolby Stereo tracks, which is exactly what's contained on the disc's audio Last edited by notops; 12-06-2018 at 09:55 PM. |
