That being said it would be nice to be able to dim subtitles. My tv has dynamic lighting and the subtitles **** with that. Especially in really dark scenes.
Oh yeah that is another great thing about having it (and why on any subtitling project I did, I always used transparent subtitles). I had the same issue on my old TVs, not to mention ruining overall black level reproduction with an edge LED tv.

If the first part of the presentation regarding color space conversion, etc. seems a bit too technical, you can skip to I think about the 13 min. mark with regards to their research on brightness of subtitles and their conclusions for the overall study come in around the 15 min. mark with Q&A at the end.

I’m not disagreeing, it matters where you are.

No 300 in USA (or maybe NA) the 420 is lowest Panny 4K model.
Not sure about other continents/ countries.

Or you're watching the dark knight, it's dark as a cave in your HT man cave. Suddenly Batman says "I am the night! SWEAR TO ME!". You're blind, the crook is not.

After reading this thread, I sent a mail to Oppo and this was their answer:

"Hello,

We have had requests for this feature and is something we are looking into. Unfortunately, we wouldn't' be able to provide an ETA on if or when this feature can be implement into a future firmware.

Best Regards,

Customer Service
OPPO Digital, Inc.
162 Constitution Dr.
Menlo Park, CA 94025
Service@oppodigital.com
"

I hope they will be able to add the feature of changing the color or brightness for subtitles.

Panasonic UHD player can dim the subtitles whilst playing Blu-rays. Is this what is required or does the OP say it must be available on all apps as well?

As this is a Blu-ray forum I was focused on 4k Blu-ray. Netflix already supports subtitle transparency & iTunes supports gray subs.

I will be grabbing a Panasonic player soon unless Oppo or other companies get with the picture and start adding this very needed universal fix. The industry should be ashamed of themselves as a firmware patch for this specific feature wouldn’t be a huge labor, and even the Panasonics to my knowledge still requires you to set this up each time that you use the player making it a hack more than a fix. All player manufacturers can easily add the Netflix-style transparency option.

Technology has gotten so good with features like HDR that in the end it’s actually excluding consumers. I would be happier with no subs and knowing that just buying the a book is going to be better than watching the 4K HDR film version with useless “HDR Solar Eclipse Subtitles”. The industry needs to get it’s act together, this is quite possibly the final physical consumer format so let’s do it right.

I don't have a 4K TV or UHD player, but I'm glad I found this thread for in the future. Intense light tends to induce my headaches so I don't want to end up like the rest of Batman's victims...

I’m glad to hear I’m not the only one. Recently bought a 75” Q80 Samsung, and too bright subtitles with HDR annoy me because they light up the whole screen in dark scenes which bugs me to the point of not being able to enjoy the movie. Had to turn them off when watching UHD A New Hope (UHD Interstellar worked like a charm because of duller subtitles).

For my question, does anyone know good subtitle settings for itunes and Netflix? I have the same problem with most HDR content on those platforms. Thanks in advance!

So much is both device and app dependent. I know on the Apple TV you have top level player defaults you can set up. But then also stuff like Netflix you can control at the profile level, and that might have different effect on a different player. I know it affects it for the 4k Apple TV, but I don't think the older 3rd gen I use in the lounge room.

It wouldn’t be applicable on a non HDR capable Apple TV anyway. Also, subtitle settings for Netflix are done on the account web page so they would be universal no matter what device you use.
