![]() ![]() When a roadblock causes them to miss a ferry, seven tourists who are traveling by bus through the European countryside are advised by a mysterious stranger to spend the night at a nearby castle belonging to Baron von Rhoneberg, a former German military officer whose family is affected by a terrible curse. As our unwitting guests settle into their rooms and are seated to enjoy dinner with their host, they are joined by another visitor, an enchanting woman played by the one and only Erika Blanc. During the night hours that follow, these tourists, each of whom are guilty of one of the seven deadly sins, are visited by this seductive figure, a demon succubus in disguise, who preys on them in gruesome ways by using their respective vices against them. The 1971 Belgian/Italian production, Devil’s Nightmare, which was directed by Jean Brismée, is a visually entrancing and wickedly entertaining slice of Euro horror mayhem that combines Gothic stylings, sleaze, and occult lore to great result. This tale of characters meeting their fates by way of the moral shortcomings that define them, playing out like a Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory for grown-ups, is given additional heft by a few Faustian narrative turns. Displays of greed, gluttony, pride, wrath, lust, envy, and sloth all have their shining moments, along with their respective penances, which come to fruition in creatively sinister ways. Along the way, we are greeted by one magnificently menacing image after another. An early scene depicting a dark figure standing next to a fire on the side of the road functions as a symbolic premonition of things to come, while the sprawling castle setting works as a character in its own right. Erika Blanc, who graces a number of Italian horror movies, namely Kill, Baby, Kill and The Night Evelyn Came Out of the Grave, along with several spaghetti westerns, including Blood at Sundown and Sartana's Here... Trade Your Pistol for a Coffin, is the clear highlight, with her vast assortment of outfits and her gleefully mischievous gaze. Jean Servais, whom all of you know from the 1955 French film noir, Rififi, is perfect as the Baron with a dreadful past. Horror movies about the seven deadly sins always leave me somewhat apprehensive, since it’s obvious to everyone who knows me that my sin is gluttony. I would either go out like the unfortunate chap who is served generous helpings of food and wine by Blanc’s succubus, or I would be crushed under the weight of my CD and Blu-ray collections. Even still, Devil’s Nightmare has my enthusiastic recommendation for those who like their life lessons to be accompanied by a healthy dose of trashy appeal. Before the main feature, this Mondo Macabro Blu-ray sports a disclaimer about the picture quality and the surviving elements. Aside from a few source-inherent specks, however, everything looks nicely filmic to my eyes. The director and crew interviews shed light on the Belgian movie scene, while the Troy Howarth commentary.... Well, let’s just say that Howarth likes Erika Blanc as much as I do. If that is possible. It will not have a booklet, reversable cover, or lobby cards (referred to as "Figure/replica/props/memorabilia included" in the description).
Those will only be included in the limited edition. Last edited by horroru; 03-20-2019 at 05:48 PM. |

Indeed ...and that's how errors happen on here when everything is simply copied from the existing Limited Edition listing.

Too bad the release used the outdated mpeg-2 codec. A quick view shows that it does look good but makes one wonder why this route was chosen. The UK will have a release coming up in 2 months. I wonder if that will use the standard AVC...or at least VC-1.
