Let's not forget Father Dear Father & Please Sir.

I think I've seen them all, and there are certainly a few duds. The aforementioned The Lovers! is a rather odd film, but a nice time-capsule.

You lot have mentioned that many ITV comedies had film spin-offs. Did the BBC get into the action as well?

The one that springs to mind is Dad's Army. A film version was released in 1971, (several years before many of the films mentioned above). Fairly good if I remember correctly, I first watched it on DVD.

Not being alive in the 70s that is the only one I know of. Were there any others?

Edit: Also, it would be great if Network could release the Dad's Army film on Blu-ray!

Hadn't forgotten but the question was about BBC shows, if we include ITV then could throw in the On The Buses movies, Bless This House, George and Mildred, Rising Damp etc etc.

The Morecambe & wise films were NOT based on their TV shows.

When looking back at the movie, it's sad to think that this marked the end of an era for British films, being one of the very last home-grown to use the Eady Levy. No longer would comedies with tax-associated cameos from big stars be made, and it was also the time when Saturday morning matinees themselves were being axed.

It always leaves the ol' bottom lip wobbling to watch Cannon & Ball walk off into the distance as the end credits of The Boys in Blue roll, as it became the perfect metaphor.

Cue gags about just being glad they were gone.

Good point. They were more sketch based... and they didn't share a bed in any of the films IIRC

Rank basically hired them as a replacement for Norman Wisdom after a two year salary dispute (which ironically or not exactly coincidentally, take your pick, was resolved by the time they made their first film). They'd also had huge success on variety shows in the States like Ed Sullivan around that time and Rank thought that would get the films major US distribution.

That was a failed throwback to the days when low budget British comedies were made specifically for specific parts of the country (ie, Frank Randle films aimed at the North). It apparently did okay business in the north of England but one of the cinemas I worked in at college in the south played it for a week and it pulled in 3-7 people a day, and it was the same story everywhere south of the Watford Gap. To make matters worse, the cinema was contractually bound to play it in the biggest screen, so opening weekend you could shoot deer in screen one and not hit anyone while they were literally not just queuing around the block but all the way to the bus depot for the double bill of the first two Mad Max films in screen two, and we were turning hundreds of people away.

Not only is it a pisspoor remake of Ask a Policeman, but a terrible big screen swansong for Val Guest: from Will Hay, Quatermass and The Day the Earth Caught Fire to "Rock on Tommy..."

Watching this at the moment and it's amazing just how much Brian Murphy/George Roper looks like a rather more intelligent Laurence Fox in the movie. Has anyone ever seen them in the same room at the same time?

It amazes me that Brian Murphy is still alive in 2022. Watching Man About the House as a kid back in the 70’s, even then I thought he looked so decrepit he’d keel over at any minute.

And still taking the occasional acting gig.

While George Roper appeared to be of early retirement age, Brian Murphy was simply middle aged. Explains a lot.

FINALLY got round to ordering this, $22 from eBay with free shipping from the UK. It’ll be nice to finally upgrade my Aussie DVD. This is like an extended episode of the series, quite funny and charming — my only quibble is that the flat interiors are completely different from the show. Also, I have an immense crush on Paula Wilcox.

His first directorial credit was Arthur Askey's 1943 musical "Miss London Ltd.".
