I had a real-life moment like this a few years ago, talking with a cousin of mine who's in her 20s. I started the conversation with the phrase "When I was your age", and immediately dialed back with, "Hold on - I'm too young to say that!" She just smiled and laughed.

The other day I was watching (well, it was on in the background) a 1994 episode of Columbo with William Shatner. That was around the time of Generations when, at the time, he was often mocked for still boldly going at his age. Yet seeing him in the episode now, I kept thinking how relatively young he looked.

Watching this film made me question; "What has changed? What has the last decade been about?" The rise of the smartphone? Even that was rolling out in the previous decade. The music still sounded modern, the clothes were no different from what I see on the street these days, the actors were still relevant and the effects held up.

Maybe I'm getting old and not noticing trends as much anymore, but I still feel nothing has changed much in the past decade or more.
That's something I've noticed too, for the most part.

It's hard to believe that The Muppet Christmas Carol is 25 years old, and to smack you in the face even harder, it's the first movie without Jim Henson and Richard Hunt. Keep that in mind when you listen to "Marley and Marley".

It was years after I saw that movie, before I learned that they purposely created "Robert Marley" after singer Bob Marley, just so they could use Statler and Waldorf in those roles.

It worked, though. Especially how they make fun of the "more gravy than of grave" line which is 100% from the book. It's still my favorite film version.

Well, age does not equal "classic" by any measure. Every year - new and old - has its share of great films and its share of awful ones, and most movies fall somewhere in between.

That being said, if we are just talking about the best films of 1994 hitting their 25th Anniversary this year, these are my personal favorites:

Best of the Best:
Pulp Fiction
Forrest Gump
Speed
The Professional (Leon)
The Lion King
Dumb & Dumber

Also Love:
The Paper
Reality Bites
Only You
Maverick
The Ref
The Crow
True Lies
The Hudsucker Proxy
Stargate

Honorable Mentions:
The Chase
Shawshank Redemption
Interview With the Vampire
Legends of the Fall
Wes Craven's New Nightmare

The Paper is just so damn good and so damn underrated.

Words to live by: "you keep waiting for the guy with the gun to show up" ... life is about the little choices you make every day.

I think a movie can become a classic the day it is released. There is no rule.

A classic is a movie that stands the test of time. There's no such thing as an "instant classic".

I think a 'classic' is based solely on the quality of the movie with time having nothing to do with it. To me, Into the Spider-Verse is a classic and it's only 2 years old.
