I think Joe Sixpack will pay the $10 a month or whatever the price will be and ignore HV releases. Why would someone pay $25-$30 for a 4K version of Moana when it's part of the $10 a month they pay for D+. I think our physical media will become even more scarce and more of a niche product than it already has become.

Which is why I think Disney is doing this. Their vault program worked before on home media because there was no other way to obtain the movie. You either had to buy it right away or wait X years for them to unvault it. With technology advancements, that model no longer works.

Disney is going to save a ton of money by no longer having to press new disks, new artwork etc for every time they unvault something.

Which is also why digital is so appealing for studios. You remove a lot of overhead by no longer having to physically provide the movie.

I think it depends on the film, but yeah people have been suggesting that 4K physical releases would happen only to selected films, probably only the Signature Collection films and the newer CGI films from Tangled till Moana. Pixar as well.

Also, this is giving Disney the amount of control over its media that it has been craving for decades. Remember, Disney was one of the plaintiffs in the 1970s Betamax lawsuit. I am curious as to the level of library access that it will permit. For instance, will Dr. Syn be always available on the platform, or will be something that will come and go?

Yes, especially when extra features are ported over.

It will be interesting to see what people ACTUALLY watch once they have access to such a large library. My children have zero interest in watching any vintage Disney films. I only got my 9-year-old to watch Pinocchio because we went on the ride at Disneyland. I think there's a good chance this channel will be a bust. For me, I'm bored to death with Marvel and Star Wars, so I don't believe there's enough content to hold my interest.

Will they be streaming SD content? I bet a lot of the older, more obscure stuff has no HD master. They may put up the "entire" library eventually, like over 20-30 years as they remaster everything.

I certainly hope it's the end of their stupid arbitrary vault.

I hope every classic cartoon short(Mickey, Donald, Goofy cartoons in particular) is on this service in glorious HD, that would do it for me.

They already have remastered a giant chunk of their live-action titles, including some vintage TV episodes, at least in 2k HD. I might be kicking myself next year for buying so many of them on Movies Anywhere and Vudu.

I bought...

Treasure Island
The Sword and the Rose
Operation Undersea (TV)
20,000 Leagues Under the Sea
Perilous Assignment (TV)
Third Man on the Mountain
I Captured the King of the Leprechauns (TV)
Darby O'Gill and the Little People
Kidnapped
Adventures in Color/Donald in Mathmagic Land (TV)
Those Calloways
Disneyland Around the Seasons (TV)
The Happiest Millionaire
The Best of Walt Disney's True-Life Adventures
Never Cry Wolf
The Journey of Natty Gann
Waking Sleeping Beauty
The Boys
Walt and El Grupo
Olaf's Frozen Adventure (ugh...only bought it to see the new masters of classic shorts, mainly Melody Time's "Once Upon a Wintertime)

...and quite a few Disney animation titles that didn't include digital copies at the time.

I can definitely agree on this one & even the HV releases of the MCU & Star Wars have been very barebones for major titles. $10 bucks a month is a steal if they release all the vault on plus. I’ve mentioned before as to believing Disney would be the first company to stop producing physical media. This may be the last year I myself may stop buying newer titles on Blu Ray. Of course now that we have the smaller ones like Shout, Kino, Arrow, etc still producing older titles, that’s still gonna get me to buy, if it’s a movie I really want.

You'll be able to buy Song of the South in 2043 if you really want it.

Otherwise import one of the foreign releases.

I expect we will eventually see all of Disney’s (and Fox’s) family friendly content on Disney+. The marginal cost of adding a movie to the service is pretty much zero and the more stuff they have the more value subscribers perceive.

Disney also owns 30% of Hulu, once their Fox acquisition closes they will own 60%. They are also in talks to buy AT&T’s 10% share. Disney has said that they will put their more adult oriented content on Hulu. I would expect that across Disney+ and Hulu (especially if they end acquiring Comcast’s share), we will see pretty much all Disney and Fox content available for streaming (at least if they have HD masters). The exceptions will be anything controversial (read: racist) like Song of the South.

I think with Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+, Disney is going to navigate the transition to streaming quite well. They have a history of dealing with this sort of transition in the past when TV came along and then home video. There’s something in this company’s DNA that allows management to embrace new technologies and think long term even though it may not make the most sense financially in the short term.

It has. I saw it on TCM during their Treasures from the Disney Vault lineup last year, and it looked great, akin to the two Hayley Mills films currently on Blu - Pollyanna and The Parent Trap. That remastering is available on both Amazon and Vudu, though I'm unsure of iTunes.

Unfortunately for the USA, the viable niche market for 3D would appear to be in Europe and Asia hence Disney's focus on that market.

Yep and still charge the same price. I heard the bs about games many years ago and yet they're about the same or more (console games) than they use to be on disc. Sure, the streaming service will still give you more content but the quality will be less and availability is on their terms. I know many people don't care though.
