After how Studio Canal handled the John Carpenter releases, I don't trust them, especially after I know how little they value their customers.

My girlfriend imported The Fog, Escape from New York, and They Live this past Christmas. The nice UHD sets. The HDR was borked on all of them to some extent, especially The Fog - the ending with the cross was bungled up pretty bad thanks to screwy HDR.

Plus my CD of The Fog was scuffed up pretty bad, and the booklet was all crunched up from them stuffing it in the over-tight package. I emailed them and politely asked them if they could help. No response. Weeks later I emailed again. No response. A month later I tried one more time. Again, no response.

Sorry, Studio Canal, you've lost my trust. And it's a shame because this is an amazing film. I fell in love with it as soon as I first discovered it a few years ago. Too bad I won't be buying your new release.

Decided to preorder the U.K. steelbook as I’m not a fan of the oversized digipak sets, plus I no longer own a CD player...

Mine too, and in case this hasn't been said already both the BD and UHD are a David M encode, it's his first Dolby Vision title and I'm expecting great things.

Oh, that’s awesome! This is a really fantastic film, and it sounds like it’s getting its definitive release. I never even got round to watching my Criterion disc, after upgrading from the previous mediocre UK disc, so I’m looking forward to revisiting this. My fancy edition was despatched earlier, so hopefully it might arrive Friday or Saturday!

Makes me hope that studiocanal can learn the HDR10 layer being botched can hopefully be avoided. Only getting the BD in oz, but I'm happy as I can add it to my Studio Canal classics remastered collection all with great masters and some poor compression(highlander).

It arrived this morning (kudos to zoom) and I just watched the first and last ten minutes, as they've been the most problematic in the past. Watched them on a 65" OLED in Dolby Vision.

And I can say.....

It.
Looks.
F***ing.
AMAZING.

No DNR. No E.E. No compression artefacts. None of that weird posterisation from the first SC Blu.

Just deep, rich colours and wonderful, appropriate grain. I'd say it looked filmic except that I've seen this projected on film and I doubt it has ever looked this good, even when it came back from the labs.

Anyone who knows this film will know how important colour is to DON'T LOOK NOW. Well, you will know that more than ever now. Every tiny instance of red leaps out at you and grabs you by the throat, with no sign of bleeding (well....you know what I mean).

Even just watching these 20 mins or so, I felt thrilled and frightened like never before, like I was seeing it for the first time. Now this is a first reaction and I'm excited and this is one of my top ten films ever so bear that in mind; but my first impression is that this may be the most beautiful 4k presentation I've seen so far. Every frame of this transfer feels infused with love and reverence and care.

As Christopher Walken would say: Wow.

Great news about David M encode!

Is there a place/thread where one can see all of the encode work he has done?

I haven't done a direct comparison but I remember the Criterion as being a vast improvement on the SC and a good transfer in its own right.

All I can say is that this release harnesses all the extra detail and colour range that 2160p and Dolby Vision can yield and yes, it looks considerably better to my eyes. How great the difference will be on different setups is not something I can answer. Put it this way: If it doesn't look superior, you might want to reconsider your set-up.

I will certainly never go back to watching this on Blu-ray, given the choice.

(One odd thing: The menu (showing scenes from the movie) is silent. Not complaining - I actually find looped music quite annoying over time - but I'm not sure if it's intentional. It looks like it should have some Donaggio over it; but maybe not.

Also, my digipack was a little bashed - not the spine, the other side, as often happens with these things. Doesn't really bother me but I know it drives some people here nuts, so - "pass the warning".)

And the packaging looks better in hand than any of the pics show. The Irish ratings logo has been omitted, reducing the clutter.

StudioCanal's menus are usually animated on these newer releases BUT they are silent, yes. It's not a problem.

I'm delighted to hear that. But also a little bummed 'cause it means they're unlikely to use him for Apocalypse Now. Mulholland Drive in 2017, Don't Look Now in 2019. The next David M joint isn't scheduled until 2021
