I want more animated films that were optimized for 70mm like The Black Cauldron, Fantasia 2000, Treasure Planet, Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, Sleeping Beauty, AKIRA and Frozen.
Especially Sleeping Beauty and AKIRA.

Most of the titles mentioned in your post are limited to 2K resolution at the source level. (Frozen/Aladdin/BATB/Fantasia 2000/Treasure Planet). BATB and Fantasia were released in IMAX printed out from the 2K resolution CAPS files. Black Cauldron and Sleeping Beauty are actual 70mm titles.

I'm not familiar enough with Akira to speak to it.

If we're talking film-stock, both are 35mm negatives.

They're technically 35mm, but they're large format.

Yes, both were photographed using the Technirama process an unusual format where they used 35mm film turned sideways (8-perforations instead of normal 35mm film's 4) - a model similar to VistaVision except that it added an optical squeeze on it. The squeeze was removed when using the negative to make actual Technirama70mm prints.

It is discussed briefly in this article on the restoration of Sleeping Beauty.

Actually. Fantasia 2000 was done on IMAX film. It is the first full-length IMAX Hollywood movie made. It was released in IMAX first for a 6-month exclusive engagement until the wide non-IMAX release in June.

Technirama 70 is actually the name of the release format; the camera system itself is just called Technirama.

10 September is going to be insane with 8 Pixar movies, Alladin live action and Alladin classic. August will be quite expensive aswell with the MCU movies coming out on 4k and October has 3 MCU releases aswell. Yeah, wallet is crying.

It's not technically an "optical" squeeze either in the general sense of that word being a post-production process, though if one is referring strictly to the lenses - which is where the 1.5x anamorphic squeeze is located, at the point of image capture - then I guess "optical" still works.

Well, it's certainly not digital.

Fantasia 2000 was released in the IMAX film format, but the IMAX print is simply created from the CAPS system files, which were approx. 2K resolution files, just like Lion King and Beauty and the Beast - the film was still created in/locked at 2K resolution and would appear similar to Lion King if released in 4K. (Not that that would be a bad thing.)

Aladdin was meant to have an IMAX release, and had a trailer using "Friend Like Me" shown in front of Lion King's IMAX Release.
The IMAX release was cancelled, but a few of the background/character animation clean-up efforts made for the re-release made it to the Platinum Edition DVD.

I actually saw the movie twice in IMAX and I'm fairly certain it was full IMAX and not fake IMAX. What you're saying is that it was full IMAX, but done on the 2K CAPS system correct? If so, how is that possible?

FANTASIA 2000 was full IMAX large format film stock for sure.

Back then most IMAX film platters were never built for films over a certain running time. I believe DISNEY themselves help and or paid for the IMAX theatre upgrades to hold the film itself.

This of course was a few years before the FauxMax screens to pop up.

I saw FANTASIA 2000 I think 5 or so times at the IMAX in Apple Valley which was at the time the largest IMAX screen in the Midwest.

When I saw Beauty and the Beast at the same theatre the amount of detail I saw in the backgrounds alone was astounding. (even if it was at a lower REZ)

Imax Film prints were "printed out" from the original CAPS animation files stored in a computer.

The CAPS format really was amazing and ahead of it's time. 2K resolution printed out onto the 70mm format direct from the digital source at a 1.55:1 ratio looked nearly flawless. I saw Fantasia 2000, Beauty and Lion King in 70mm IMAX and the prints were absolutely phenomenal. I'd love to see them again someday.
