i had to look up some stuff about this a while ago and i still dont fully understand it still but it has something to do with movie film being in insanely high definition. higher than we've had at home 10+ years ago. So many older films were filmed on movie film in a 4k resolution a long time ago but were redone in a lower quality so we could watch at home.
*cringe* No, older films were not filmed in 4K, photographic film doesn't have a pixel resolution. What it has is a certain granularity, which is virtually irrelevant for Disney catalogue releases because their digital restoration process involves degraining and freezing the backgrounds and pretty much repainting the characters. The results vary but more often than not it looks kinda weird, with flat-looking characters floating over absolutely static backgrounds.

The reason that modern, digitally shot movies are most often upscaled for 4K releases is that they're finished in 2K for mostly budgetary and time reasons. Doing effects shots in 4K is much more expensive, takes much longer and is mostly unnecessary. 4K video files also take up four times as much storage space as 2K ones, making handling them during production more difficult. We're talking terabytes here.

Scanning existing analog film material for a 4K release is peanuts, shooting a digital movie in native 4K is much more difficult and expensive. And it's not like many people will actually notice the difference in the end.

I wish the the cover and back artworks were swapped. I want to see the Dalmatians on the cover, not Cruella.

Wish I had the money to keep buying these. Seems like every week we are getting nice ones! I’m not complaining either.

As much as I love this hobby, I value spending time with my daughter more. She’s only 7, and I know the time will fly. I won’t be able to get the moments back with her.

Maybe when she gets into her teenage years and doesn’t want to be around me anymore (like her mama already is haha) then I’ll consider another job.

Looks nice and I love me some red. If it lingers and price-drops, I may bite. Otherwise I'm fine with the Diamond Edition.

I don't get the praise. It's so boring, and not so much minimalist as it is lazy. Red background. A piece of clipart. Anyone could make this in Photoshop in 3 minutes. Even the whopping "101" font is paltry with spots. "The devil take it, they're mongrels."

It’s not the best SB I have seen by any means, but I like it better than the Walmart gift set I have. That thing is just out of place ha. I have it on top of my shelf because that’s all I have room for. I would rather just get a regular steelbook, and this is nice enough.

"Lazy and boring" are all of the unoriginal posts in all of the threads that say a steelbook is lazy and boring and takes 3 minutes to do in Photoshop or Paint.

They're steelbooks. They're not paintings. Nobody is going to spend more than 5 minutes designing a steelbook anymore.

Not sure why anybody expects any effort to be put into "creating" a steelbook.
It's going to sell out regardless.

If my opinion offends you just know, ..I may repeat myself if their next steelbook is lazy and boring. lol

This year's The Little Mermaid 4K ..was a painting. Fine art was literally commissioned for the design of it. That sb sold out faster than any of these other releases. KimChiDVD, Blufans, Zavvi X Mondo = relevant examples of companies who put more than 5 minutes in.

Because cover art/slips/steels, like movie posters, have the potential to host some cool works of art themselves. There's been a lot of past releases that do have some pretty good artwork. An artist myself, it kind of sets the standard for someone like me, who specifically looks for that as part of the incentive to double dip, especially if this round of releases aren't as impressive as the previous generation of Blus.

Also, it's really not that big of a deal for me, but I'll still express if I dig it or not and be genuinely curious when people drool over obviously cheap work.

See? The major corporation wins in the end. Yay

Is it me or is something up with the 101 dalmatians and maleficent 4k steelbooks. Neither are up for preorder a week before they come out. The link listed in this thread also directs to the Sleeping Beauty steelbook, not the 101 Dalmatians steelbook.

I know what you're saying and I agree but the good art like movie poster art isn't for WWA steelbooks. That art is used for amaray releases because obviously more people buy the amaray releases over steelbooks. That art is also reserved for the premium retailers. Many times Blufans uses what is basically the amaray art for their steelbooks which is often basically the movie poster.

99 times out of a 100 the movie poster or amaray art is better than anything on the steelbook. I'm saying this for the people who hate movie poster art on their steelbook (I'm not saying that's you.) But I always laugh when people say they don't want the movie poster on the steelbook. They want something different. Well then different and crap is what they get.
